The district said on Aug. 25 that it has organized a two-team task force to focus on removing aging and illegal signboards, banners and flyers, as well as other movable advertising materials near school commute routes.
The cleanup targets fixed advertisements around 14 elementary schools in the district that fall within children’s protection zones (within 300 meters of the main entrance) and education environment protection zones (within 200 meters of the boundary line). Priority will be given to signboards that are old, worn and pose a high risk of safety accidents.
In addition to fixed advertisements, the district plans to conduct on-site cleanup and enforcement against movable advertisements containing illegal, obscene or sexually suggestive content.
Political party banners hung on crosswalks or fences in front of schools are also included in the scope of this cleanup. The district plans to request that the relevant parties take safety measures, such as relocating banners, to prevent accidents on students’ routes to and from school.
There have been persistent concerns that aging advertisements in children’s protection zones obstruct students’ field of view and increase the risk of falling or collapsing. In particular, the risk of accidents is known to rise right after the semester begins, as more students are out commuting to school.
“Through this comprehensive crackdown on illegal advertisements around schools at the start of the new semester, we will work to create a clean commuting environment so that students in Jemulpo-gu can travel to and from school with peace of mind,” said Jemulpo-gu District Mayor Kim Chan-jin.
