At 8 a.m. on Aug. 25, Yeongjong-gu District held a child abuse prevention and positive parenting campaign near the back gate of Incheon Yeongjong Elementary School, with participation from District Mayor Son Hwa-jeong, Yeongjong Elementary School Principal Yoo Byung-sun, the school’s parents’ association and school steering committee, faculty members and district officials.
The campaign was designed to make use of the school commute at the start of the term to raise community interest in child abuse prevention and children’s rights, and to spread a culture of positive parenting in which parents treat their children as independent individuals within the household.
The event was held at the school’s back gate, a route with heavy student traffic, so that students commuting to school could naturally encounter the campaign without needing to set aside separate time.
Because this section borders an apartment complex, the campaign also reached parents and nearby residents, not just students, in conveying the need for child abuse prevention and positive parenting, and was seen as an occasion to raise community interest and willingness to put these principles into practice.

One Yeongjong Elementary School parent who took part in the campaign said, “It was meaningful to be able to participate as a parent in creating an environment where children can grow up bright and healthy.” The parent added, “I will also respect and care for my child as an individual at home, and help my child think independently and grow up healthy.”
Yeongjong-gu District is regarded as a young district with a high proportion of children and adolescents amid continued new town development and population inflow, and building a local environment where children can grow up safely and healthily has been cited as a key regional task. Accordingly, the district has worked to build a close-knit child protection system that goes beyond responding after child abuse occurs, aiming instead to prevent abuse and detect crisis situations early at the family and community level.
District Mayor Son Hwa-jeong said, “For children to grow up safely and happily, not only families but also schools and the community as a whole need a culture that listens to and respects children’s voices.”
Mayor Son added, “We will continue to provide ongoing attention and support for children, and do our utmost to establish an administrative environment that builds a community where children’s rights are respected.”
