The National Science Museum will run the 65th session of Science Culture University from September 10 to December 3 in order to broaden access to quality science education, which adults find harder to encounter once they pass their teenage years.
Science Culture University is a program that was renamed from the former ‘Traditional Science University’ beginning in the second half of last year, expanding its themes from science and technology found solely in Korean history to a wide range of scientific fields in everyday life. This session will feature a total of ten lectures on ‘science in daily life’, such as the heat waves that struck Europe and Korea in 2026, and ‘science in history’, such as the scientific and cultural heritage of the Three Kingdoms period, along with two field trips linked to the lecture content.
The lectures begin on September 10 with an opening ceremony and the talk ‘Wild Animals Living in the City’ (Park Ga-hyeon, Chungnam Wildlife Rescue Center), followed by ‘Europe’s Extreme Weather Is Not Someone Else’s Problem’ (Shin Bang-sil, KBS), ‘Bodies That Differ From Person to Person, Between Health and Disease’ (Lee Si-woo, Gachon University), ‘How Scent Moved Civilizations’ (Nam Seo-yun, Nomad Science), ‘A Dream That Began on Our Planet’ (Kim Hyeong-sin, Chungnam National University), ‘The Scientific Heritage of the Three Kingdoms and the Stories Behind It’ (Kim Su-tae, Chungnam National University), and ‘Eco-friendly Architecture Learned From the Wild’ (Lee Jong-won, Keimyung University). The final lecture will be held on December 3 with ‘Lies in the Guise of Science’ (Park Jae-yong, writer), together with the completion ceremony. The field trips will be run as two-day, one-night programs, visiting sites such as the Herbal Medicine Expo Park in Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do on October 15, and the Gyeongju Expo and King Munmu Marine History Museum in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do on November 19-20. However, the lecture schedule may be changed or canceled depending on operating circumstances.
The museum will continue in the second half of the year its monthly ‘Science Museum Invitation Week’, newly launched in the first half. This is an attempt to further broaden general access to science, inviting 20 to 40 participants from partner institutions such as local lifelong learning centers and welfare centers to the museum to offer them the chance to take Science Culture University courses. Applications from partner institutions will also be accepted in the second half of the year.
Students will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. on August 27 to 3 p.m. on September 4 through the integrated reservation system on the National Science Museum website. Tuition is 120,000 won, with field trip costs charged separately. Further details are available on the National Science Museum website (www.science.go.kr).
Lee Eun-young, director of the National Science Museum, said, ‘Science Culture University holds significance in spreading science culture to the general public by providing quality science education opportunities that adults find hard to access after their teenage years,’ adding, ‘We will continue to provide support so that people can broaden their understanding of the scientific principles woven into our history and daily lives.’
