ETRI Joins Linux Foundation’s ‘Agentic AI Foundation’… Moving to Secure a Lead in International Standards

Joining AAIF with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT, taking part from the earliest stage of shaping core specifications such as MCP

Posted Article No. 56754

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (President Park Se-woong, ETRI) has joined the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation, laying the groundwork to secure core standards for ‘agentic AI’—a technology drawing attention as the next generation of artificial intelligence—and to broaden channels for international cooperation. The membership was made possible through the Ministry’s program supporting the development of information, communications and broadcasting standards.

Agentic AI refers to technology in which AI goes beyond existing generative AI that answers users’ questions or drafts documents (such as ChatGPT and Gemini), planning on its own and linking multiple programs and services to carry out actual tasks. AI technology has recently been advancing rapidly toward this autonomous, task-performing stage, and for different AI systems and external services to exchange information smoothly, a common connection specification—that is, a standard—is essential.

A representative example is the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It is a standard for service connection and data exchange designed to handle a variety of tasks—schedule management, meeting reservations, data analysis and more—by linking multiple systems, and it is regarded as a foundational technology for implementing agentic AI.

The AAIF, which ETRI has joined, is a specialized organization established last December by the Linux Foundation, the world’s largest nonprofit technology foundation. Its purpose is to develop and spread open-source-based common standards so that agentic AI technology evolves in an open and interoperable manner rather than being tied to any single company. As of August 2026, just eight months after its founding, the foundation has grown into a de facto standardization body with roughly 250 companies and institutions taking part, including global big tech such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Microsoft (MS), Anthropic, OpenAI and Mistral AI, as well as Stanford University and domestic industry-academia-research players such as NHN KCP, Danal, Nexus, ETRI and Lablup.

The AAIF operates seven technical working groups—covering accuracy and reliability; identity and trust; security and privacy; observability and traceability; governance and risk-and-regulation response; workflow and process integration; and agent commerce—researching the core foundational technologies of agentic AI and its commercial applications. The foundation is currently advancing five open-source projects: Anthropic’s MCP, Block’s ‘goose’, OpenAI’s ‘AGENTS.md’, Solo.io’s ‘agent gateway’ and Google’s ‘Agent2Agent (A2A)’.

The significance of this membership lies in the fact that Korea’s research community will now take part from the earliest stage in the very place where core agentic AI specifications, including MCP, are actually being created. Through collaboration with the seven technical working groups, ETRI will participate in the open-source development of core standards for interoperability, reliability, security and governance, expand opportunities for joint research with global companies and research institutions, and build a foundation to reflect and spread Korea’s research achievements in international standards.

Park Tae-wan, Director-General for Information and Communications Industry Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, ‘Agentic AI, together with physical AI, is a core technology that will lead the reasoning-type AI market expected to grow rapidly,’ adding, ‘We hope ETRI’s membership in the AAIF will serve as a springboard, so that the outstanding R&D achievements of Korea’s industry, academia and research institutions become the seedbed for leading the agentic AI market.’ He continued, ‘We will link our efforts with the activities of international standardization bodies such as ITU-T and ISO/IEC JTC 1 so that de facto standards and formal standards connect organically, and we will actively support the rapid standardization of the core technologies held by Korea’s capable AI industry-academia-research sector so that they translate into tangible benefits for our companies.’
