The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that it held the ‘2026 K-DATA SCIENCE Conference & Hackathon’ at Hotel Suseong in Daegu on September 11, where some 300 data science convergence talents took part in research presentations, a hackathon, and a job fair. The event focused on connecting the advanced workforce that will handle data—the core resource of the artificial intelligence era—with industry sites.

Since 2022, the Ministry of Science and ICT has pursued the ‘Data Science Convergence Talent Development’ project to cultivate master’s- and doctoral-level personnel who combine data expertise such as artificial intelligence and statistical analysis with knowledge of science and technology such as bio and energy, industry such as manufacturing and robotics, and the humanities and social sciences such as management, economics, and finance. Data science is a convergence field that studies scientific methodologies for collecting, analyzing, and processing data in order to draw meaningful information from diverse data.
This Conference & Hackathon was arranged as a stage for joint cooperation toward the advancement of data science graduate schools. Some 300 students and researchers gathered from the 10 graduate schools participating in the convergence talent development project and from universities across the country, including Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Data Science. The event was divided into a hackathon and a conference, with the conference comprising a research achievement presentation, a poster session, and a data science consortium roundtable.
The hackathon ran from September 9 to 11. Of the 56 teams that applied, 26 teams (81 people in total) that passed the preliminaries advanced to the finals to compete. The participants, made up of graduate and undergraduate students from across the country, developed programs that solve real-world industrial problems and create new value using artificial intelligence (AI) and data science (DS) technologies based on the actual needs of companies. As a result, Xdoctors, a team from the University of Seoul that developed an explainable clinical decision support system capable of linking evidence and deferring judgment, received the award of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT.
At the K-DATA SCIENCE Conference held on the 11th, graduate students’ poster sessions and research presentations continued. In the research presentation, 28 topics selected in the first round out of 59 submitted research topics were presented, and Lee Jun-hyung, a doctoral candidate at UNIST, presented ‘Recovering Predictions without Regretting Decisions—A Cone-constrained Prediction Recovery for Decision-Focused Learning’ and won the award of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT. The top teams in the hackathon and the research presentation received the Minister’s award along with prize money of 2 million won.
In particular, this event operated a job fair in partnership with the Suseong-gu Office. With various companies participating, including those in the data science and artificial intelligence sectors, graduate and undergraduate students from universities nationwide communicated directly with corporate representatives to obtain recruitment information and explore career and employment opportunities. Beyond merely sharing research achievements, the event created a channel that connects students’ majors and capabilities with industry sites so that they can lead to actual employment. This is significant in that it helps data specialists trained in graduate schools advance into various parts of industry rather than remaining in academia.
Yoon Kyung-sook, Director-General for Basic and Original Research Policy, emphasized, ‘This is a historic moment when artificial intelligence is changing the paradigm of science and technology, and as data is at the heart of AI technology, the role and responsibility of data scientists have become even more important.’ She added, ‘Going forward, I expect that Korea’s data science academia will pioneer new fields of research and industry and play an important role in the innovation of the coming artificial intelligence era.’
