On September 21, the council held a “Chuseok Holiday Food Sharing Event” for isolated neighbors, including elderly people living alone and basic livelihood recipients, who tend to feel loneliness more acutely during the holidays. The event was organized to foster ties between neighbors during the holiday season and build a community that looks out for one another.
On the day, council members carefully prepared songpyeon, beef and other items and personally visited each of the 200 target households one by one. Rather than simply handing over food, they paid close attention to each household, checking on the health and well-being of elderly residents and offering companionship through conversation.
The holiday period is considered a time when feelings of isolation and loss can intensify, particularly for elderly people living alone apart from family or households facing financial hardship. For this reason, activities in which local civilian councils directly visit and check on vulnerable residents around the holidays are seen as filling gaps that the public welfare safety net cannot fully reach.
Civilian Chair Heo Bok-sun said, “I feel a great sense of fulfillment in being able to share warmth with our neighbors even amid difficult circumstances,” adding, “I hope that this Chuseok, all neighbors can be a source of strength for one another and enjoy an abundant holiday filled with health and happiness.”
Jang Hyeok-jun, head of Yeongheung-myeon, said, “I am grateful for the dedication of the council members, who always lead by example even amid the busy demands of their own livelihoods,” adding, “The administration will also pay closer attention to ensure no neighbor is left out during the holidays.”
