Incheon’s Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jeong) has released 510,000 juvenile Korean rockfish into the Yongyu and Muui waters within its jurisdiction to restore fishery resources along the West Sea coast and increase the incomes of local fishing households. The district announced this on the 8th. The release took place on the 7th.

The released rockfish measure at least 6 cm but less than 10 cm in total length. Seoul National University’s National Instrumentation Center for Environmental Management analyzed the genes of the broodstock and the seed fish and confirmed that the fry had been produced by the supplier itself. The fish also passed infectious disease testing by the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service. According to the district, they are vigorous, healthy, high-quality seed stock.
The Muui and Yongyu waters, where artificial reefs have been installed, were chosen as release sites because conditions there help young fish adapt to their new environment. The district plans to restrict the use of certain fishing gear for a set period and run a campaign to stamp out illegal fishing, as part of its push to restore fishery resources in the area.
Yeongjong-gu Mayor Son Hwa-jeong attended the release along with district council members, the head of the Incheon Fisheries Cooperative, fishing village association heads and local residents. With people from the fishing industry taking part in person, the event showed shared support for the resource enhancement project.

“I hope this rockfish release will create even more abundant fishing grounds,” Mayor Son said. “We will continue to carry out release projects to boost fishery productivity and increase the incomes of local fishers.”
Following the rockfish release, the district plans to release additional surf clams by the end of October. The project combines stock releases, fishing gear restrictions and a campaign against illegal fishing, and it remains to be seen whether it will help strengthen the income base of fishers in the Yongyu and Muui waters.
