Incheon Metropolitan City visited the village hall in Josan-ri, Yangdo-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, to provide local seniors with safety education on traffic rules and to carry out promotional and campaign activities.
The campaign was organized in response to the judgment that traffic-safety management for seniors has become urgent, as deaths among elderly pedestrians in the area have surged compared with the previous year. Rather than waiting for residents to come to a government office, Incheon City focused on going directly to the field to raise seniors’ awareness of traffic safety and to foster a safer traffic environment. The approach took into account the circumstances of the rural elderly, who tend to have limited mobility and less access to information.
The event was conducted as a joint public-private effort, with about 20 participants including officials from Incheon City’s Traffic Safety Division and Public Relations Planning Office, Ganghwa-gun’s Road and Traffic Division, as well as members of related organizations such as Ganghwa-gun’s Green Mothers Association and the Model Drivers Association. With administrative agencies and local volunteer groups taking part together, the initiative was designed to go beyond a one-off event and lead to sustained interest across the local community.
To prevent nighttime traffic accidents among rural seniors, Incheon City is joining hands with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to roll out a full-scale campaign in the second half of the year. Reflective items were produced and distributed to seniors to improve nighttime visibility, and the traffic-safety education and campaign held on this day will be made into a video for future public outreach.
Jeon Yun-hui, head of Incheon City’s Traffic Safety Division, stressed, ‘We hope this education and campaign will raise seniors’ awareness of traffic safety,’ adding, ‘We will continue to work closely with related institutions and do our utmost to create a traffic environment in which seniors can walk with peace of mind.’
Building on this activity, Incheon City plans to continue its traffic-safety campaign through the second half of the year and to pursue diverse promotional efforts, including public-service advertisements at bus stops and on subway platform screen doors. The measure is intended to bring traffic-safety messages into the everyday routes of all citizens, not just a single village, and carries significance in enhancing the effectiveness of protecting elderly pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
