The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (Chairman Chung Woo-sung) announced that every member of the Korean national team won a medal at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), held from the 9th to the 16th in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

This year’s competition drew 375 students from 92 countries. Among the Korean team, Jeong Min-chan (Korea Science Academy of KAIST, 3rd year) and Yang Seung-min (Seondeok High School, 3rd year) won gold medals, Byun Jae-woo (Gyeonggi Science High School, 3rd year) won a silver medal, and Son Jae-won (Seoul Science High School, 2nd year) won a bronze medal.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is open to students under the age of 20 who have not yet received a university education, with each country fielding up to four competitors. First held in Bulgaria in 1989, it has since been hosted annually in a different location around the world. Its aim is to inspire the world’s gifted young minds in information science and to promote international friendship and cultural exchange.

The competition was held over two days, with participants solving three computer programming problems during a five-hour session each day. Each problem was worth 100 points, for a total of 600 points, and the problems are selected through an open call among participating countries. This year, two problems submitted by Korea, ‘Tiling Game’ and ‘Partition’, were adopted, along with problems contributed by Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. The six problems posed (Marble Machine, Monument, Tiling Game, Partition, Magic City and Classroom Game) spanned a wide range of fields, including tree structures, optimal matching and complexity theory.

With Korea’s submitted problems being selected and every member of its team winning a medal, observers say the strength of the nation’s informatics education and the excellence of its instructors and team training program have once again been confirmed. The team members were selected through a process of identifying and training gifted students in information science, carried out by the Korea Informatics Olympiad Committee under the Korea Association of Computer Education.

Kim Sung-yeol (Konkuk University), who led the Korean team as its head delegate, said, ‘I am delighted that every member of the Korean team won a medal and finished the competition with outstanding results.’ He added, ‘I am proud of the passion and skill our students showed on the world stage, and I look forward to their achievements in the years ahead.’

Meanwhile, following this competition, the Korean team is scheduled to compete in a series of International Science Olympiads this year, including Earth Science (Aug. 20–27), Astronomy and Astrophysics (Sept. 25–Oct. 5) and Junior Science (Dec. 2–9), drawing attention to the results still to come.
