Incheon Joins Travelers on Deokjeok Island for ‘Climate Action Campaign’

Carrying on the value of a 'Waste-Free Island'... encouraging carbon-neutral participation at summer tourist sites

Posted Article No. 55121

The city of Incheon has carried out a climate action campaign on Deokjeok Island, drawing direct participation from travelers who flock to the island during the summer holiday season. What sets it apart is that it prompted visitors experiencing the island’s nature firsthand to recognize for themselves the need for carbon neutrality in everyday life.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it held a climate action campaign around Deokjeok Island on August 15, together with the Incheon Council for Sustainable Development.

This campaign is a project that carries forward the value of the ‘Waste-Free Island’ declared in 2025. It was organized to reduce waste in island areas during the summer, when tourists are concentrated, and to spread a culture of proper disposal and eco-friendly living. Given that waste discarded at tourist sites places a direct burden on residents’ living environment and the island ecosystem, the initiative focused on drawing out voluntary action from visitors themselves.

Taking travelers’ main routes into account, the campaign was held at locations such as the Incheon Port terminal and the Deokjeok Island ferry dock. On-site programs invited citizen participation, including guidance on the ‘Waste-Free Island’ action guide, explanations of climate action for travelers, an OX quiz, and individual pledges to practice climate action. Beyond simple environmental promotion, it stood out for conveying that small daily actions are the starting point for responding to the climate crisis, and for encouraging travelers to lend a hand and take part on their own initiative.

This event was carried out as one of the activity programs of the climate action practice group run by the Deokjeok Island Residents’ Autonomous Council. The city’s Environment and Climate Policy Division, the Incheon Council for Sustainable Development, volunteers from the climate action practice group, and local residents all took part, adding meaning to the idea of carbon-neutral practice led by the community itself.

The city promoted this campaign in connection with the week of ‘In-gi-nal (Incheon 1.5℃ Climate Action Day),’ intensively raising awareness of the importance of practicing carbon neutrality in daily life. Through this, citizens and tourists visiting Deokjeok Island were able to recognize the need for climate action more directly, right at the site where they encountered the island’s natural environment.

Jeong Seung-hwan, head of the city’s Environment Bureau, said, ‘I hope this will serve as an opportunity for travelers who visit Deokjeok Island to reflect on the meaning of carbon neutrality and climate action amid its beautiful natural surroundings,’ adding, ‘Through the active work of the climate action practice group, we will do our best to ensure that this does not end as a one-off event, but that a sustainable, low-carbon travel culture spreads throughout the community.’

The city of Incheon plans to continue expanding life-oriented climate action campaigns involving both citizens and tourists, and to raise the on-the-ground impact of resource circulation and carbon-neutral policies through tailored environmental activities that reflect the characteristics of island regions.
