Newly Launched Jemulpo-gu to Open Special Exhibition Weaving Past and Present into a ‘Patchwork’

An exhibition spotlighting the name of Jemulpo-gu, the district set to be newly launched on July 1 under an administrative reorganization, is being prepared. The Incheon Jung-gu Cultural Foundation will hold the special exhibition ‘Jemulpo Patchwork: All about Chemulpo’ in the special exhibition hall of the Incheon Open Port Museum starting July 1.

In step with the launch of the new autonomous district, the exhibition takes the place name ‘Jemulpo’ itself as its central theme. It gathers materials of differing character — documentary records, old maps, scenic photographs and works of art — and weaves them together as if stitching a patchwork, casting a multidimensional light on the historical and cultural significance of Jemulpo.

The exhibition is organized around five themes: ‘Fragments of Records,’ ‘Fragments of Maps,’ ‘Fragments of Scenery,’ ‘Fragments of Expression’ and ‘Another Fragment.’ Structured to present different materials divided by theme, it allows visitors to trace the appearance of Jemulpo across eras and media.

The materials on display are also rich in detail. Through ‘Chemulpo’ as written in foreign documents and maps, materials related to ‘Jemulpo City’ used immediately after liberation, and footage capturing Jemulpo Port in the 1910s, visitors can see how the face of Jemulpo changed from era to era.

The exhibition also examines, based on various maps and materials, how the area of Jemulpo has changed over time and how far the spatial scope of today’s Jemulpo-gu extends. It also introduces Jemulpo-related names still in use today, showing how place names of the past are connected to the present.

A foundation official said, “This exhibition was planned to shed new light on the diverse meanings and stories carried by the name ‘Jemulpo’ by weaving together different materials,” adding, “We hope it will serve as an occasion for visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s history and identity, grounded in the many facets of Jemulpo found in its records, spaces, scenery and culture.”

The exhibition runs from July 1 through February 28, 2027, in the special exhibition hall of the Incheon Open Port Museum. As an exhibition that traces the roots of the name just as the new autonomous district takes its first steps, it is expected to carry added meaning as a place to inscribe local identity. Further details are available on the foundation’s website (jcf.or.kr).
