Incheon’s Jung-gu District announced on the 29th that it has completed advance maintenance of roads and information signs within its jurisdiction ahead of the launch of “Yeongjong-gu” under the administrative system reorganization set for July 1. The move is intended to head off any confusion among residents and visitors that could arise from the change in the district’s name before the launch takes place.

The maintenance was carried out to reflect the name change accompanying the launch of Yeongjong-gu on the signs in advance, thereby minimizing inconvenience to citizens and visually establishing the identity of the new autonomous district. Since residents could face confusion if the wayfinding system remained unchanged even after the administrative boundaries were altered, the district began by overhauling frontline signs in time for the launch.
After drawing up a plan to overhaul the information signs in July of last year, the district conducted a full survey of the departments responsible for the signs to grasp the current status. Based on this, it began advance maintenance in March of this year and completed all the work during this month.
The maintenance covered a total of 2,356 items in the Yeongjong area, including road signs; nameplates for the district office and administrative welfare centers; tourism information signs; signs for related agencies within the jurisdiction; and signs at convenience facilities such as parks and parking lots. A total of more than 785 million won was invested in the project, of which the city and the district each shouldered over 392.5 million won.
The district plans to continue follow-up maintenance even after the launch of Yeongjong-gu. It has decided to promptly maintain not only signs that have yet to be addressed, such as streetlight tags, but also any signs that have not been identified, through continued full surveys.
A Jung-gu District official said, “This overhaul of the information signs is a visual first step signaling the stable launch of Yeongjong-gu,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure there is no inconvenience to residents not only in road and traffic infrastructure but across all areas of administrative services, so that the new administrative system can settle in stably from the early stages of its launch.”
