Michuhol-gu Activates Traffic Safety Working Council to Improve Pedestrian Environment

Second meeting held June 30 at Michuhol Police Station; campaigns for school zones and tougher enforcement on personal mobility devices discussed

Incheon’s Michuhol-gu District has joined forces with relevant agencies to reduce traffic accidents and create a safer road environment. On June 30, the district held the “Second 2026 Traffic Safety Working Council Meeting” at the Hanmaruteo hall of Michuhol Police Station, reviewing the full range of traffic safety issues within its jurisdiction. The meeting went beyond a routine gathering, serving as a forum to devise practical, working-level measures that can actually reduce accidents.

The Traffic Safety Working Council is a cooperative body that brings together working-level officials from agencies directly connected to traffic safety, centered on Michuhol-gu and including Michuhol Police Station, the Korea Road Traffic Authority, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the Green Mothers’ Association and the Model Drivers’ Association. Because it gathers the working-level staff who observe road conditions most closely, the council places emphasis on filling policy blind spots and drawing up measures that can be applied directly on the ground.

A wide range of issues were addressed at the meeting. First, the participants agreed to carry out intensive crackdowns to establish a sound traffic culture, and to identify areas with repeated complaints or significant disruptions to traffic flow and expand traffic safety facilities there. In school zones, they decided to conduct traffic safety campaigns to heighten the awareness of both drivers and pedestrians, and to further strengthen enforcement against the unauthorized abandonment and safety violations of personal mobility devices such as electric kick scooters, whose use has surged recently.

In particular, the participants agreed on the need to improve the pedestrian environment on back roads and around elementary schools. Because back roads, where vehicles and pedestrians easily mix, and school surroundings, where children travel to and from school, are places where a small lapse can lead to a major accident, they agreed to divide roles among the agencies and to build an even tighter day-to-day cooperation system.

Such discussions also align with the trend of growing public interest in the safety of residential roads. As personal mobility devices spread rapidly, increasing friction with pedestrians, and demands for safety in front of schools grow, the role of a council in which relevant agencies regularly share issues and coordinate response directions is becoming ever more important.

A district official said, “Traffic safety is an important livelihood issue directly linked to the lives of residents,” adding, “Going forward, we will continue to work with relevant agencies to develop field-centered policies that residents can feel, such as improving the pedestrian environment.”
