ESG Green Signal Ep.15 · The 5-Minute Shower Challenge
Saving a stream of water also saves energy and lowers carbon burden
In the morning, we often turn on the shower in a hurry and let warm water fall over our shoulders. Those few minutes can be a small comfort that wakes the body and starts the day. That is why the idea of “shortening shower time” can sometimes sound like losing a bit of ease in daily life.
But today’s suggestion is not about enduring discomfort. It is a simple lifestyle experiment that trims a familiar routine just a little, saving both water and energy. Its name is plain: the 5-Minute Shower Challenge.
🌱What Five Minutes Means
A standard showerhead uses about 12 to 15 liters of water per minute. Cutting a shower by five minutes can save about 60 to 75 liters each time. That is not a small number. When we remember that a Seoul resident uses about 293 liters of water a day, with about 222 liters used at home on average, one shower habit becomes a realistic starting point for changing household water use.
Water saving is not only about the water bill. About 15% of household energy is used to heat water. Using less warm water also reduces the energy needed to bring in and heat that water, along with the carbon burden created in the process. This is why environmental action can begin not in a distant policy room, but inside the bathroom.
🌱Make It Comfortable
The easiest way to shorten a shower is not to rush, but to set an order. Before turning on the water, prepare your towel and clothes, and place shampoo and body wash within reach. Wet your body, turn off the water while lathering, and then rinse again. A small timer or phone alarm set five minutes earlier can also reduce the pressure of guessing the time.
Changing equipment is another option. Low-flow WaterSense or EcoSmart showerheads are known to reduce water use by 40 to 60%. If you worry about lower water pressure, try one first in the bathroom your family uses most often. What matters is not perfect saving, but a method you can keep using.
🌱Turn It Into a Family Promise
A promise made alone can fade quickly. Put a small checklist near the bathroom or by the front door, and let each family member mark the days they succeed. For children, saying “use only as much warm water as you need” may be clearer than simply saying “save water.” The environmental side of ESG grows from these everyday experiences of keeping small promises.
Still, this should never mean skipping washing or giving up hygiene. Health and cleanliness come first. What we are trying to reduce is not necessary washing, but the time we let water run out of habit. Change can begin simply by noticing what we are doing while the water is flowing.
💡 Action Guide
★☆☆ Turn On a Timer
Before today’s shower, set an alarm five minutes shorter than usual and check your actual time.
★★☆ Turn Off While Lathering
For one week, try turning off the shower while shampooing and using soap.
★★★ Check the Showerhead
Look at your home showerhead and replace one with a low-flow model first to compare how your family likes it.
⚠️ Watch Out For This
Do not choose a product just because it says “eco-friendly.” Check actual water-saving standards or certification, and consider comfort and durability after replacement. Also, saving water by showering too cold or not rinsing enough is hard to sustain and may not be good for health.
Cutting five minutes from a shower is not about forcing everyone to move at the same speed. It is a small choice to notice the flow of water in a way that fits your own life. If you save five minutes in the bathroom today, you lighten the use of water, hot-water energy, and your sense of responsibility all at once. This week, stand before the shower and turn on your own green signal.
