Yeonsu 2-dong Residents’ Council Shares Homemade Pickled Cucumbers with Neighbors This Summer

Committee members deliver 500 homemade pickled cucumbers to 8 senior centers to support elderly residents through the summer

Posted Article No. 51514

The Yeonsu 2-dong Residents’ Council in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, has offered support to elderly neighbors for the summer season with a homemade summer side dish. On July 2, the council delivered pickled cucumbers it had made itself to eight senior centers in the area. What makes the effort especially meaningful is that the members did not simply distribute goods purchased at a market, but shared a side dish they had prepared themselves, taking part from the preparation of the ingredients onward.

The sharing initiative was arranged to deliver pickled cucumbers — a highly useful item on the summer table — to elderly residents and to revive a sense of neighborly affection. The effort reflected the intention to provide practical help by preparing a side dish that can be easily served during a season when the heat tends to sap the appetite.

The members took part in the preparation process from beginning to end. On June 15, they participated directly in every stage, from preparing the ingredients to pickling the cucumbers and dividing and packaging them. The 500 pickled cucumbers prepared with such care were delivered to the senior centers, adding warmth to the local community.

Jang Sang-sun, chair of the Residents’ Council, said, “Going forward, we plan to invigorate the local community through various sharing activities in which residents take part together, and to work toward building a warm village where people care for one another.”
