The Yeongjong-gu Youth Center in Incheon has boosted its capacity to manage visitor safety through a hands-on joint drill preparing for disasters such as fires. The center announced on the 7th that it recently conducted a joint fire drill and safety education alongside the Unnam 119 Safety Center of the Yeongjong Fire Station and the Yeongjong-gu Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, in preparation for disasters such as fires at the facility.

The drill was carried out as a realistic simulation exercise under the professional supervision and guidance of the Unnam 119 Safety Center, the fire station with jurisdiction over the area. Rather than a simple demonstration, it was notable for assuming an actual disaster scenario and inspecting initial response procedures exactly as they would unfold.
Volunteer fire brigade members, made up of staff from the Youth Center and the Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, carried out in sequence the tasks of relaying the situation, guiding visitors to evacuate, and suppressing the initial blaze using indoor fire hydrants until the 119 firefighters arrived at the scene. It was a process to verify how well the facility could exercise its own initial on-site response capabilities during the so-called “golden time” before firefighting personnel arrived.

Immediately after the joint drill, tailored fire safety education followed, with firefighters from the Unnam 119 Safety Center demonstrating and providing guidance in person. The education consisted of how to act and respond in a fire, practice in opening indoor fire hydrants and discharging water, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) practice to secure the golden time.

In particular, with support from the jurisdictional 119 Safety Center, participants observed firsthand the deployment process of an aerial ladder truck — special equipment for rescuing people from upper floors — and staff took part in an experiential exercise by boarding it, drawing an enthusiastic response. The experience was assessed as raising participants’ understanding of and sense for responding to disaster situations by handling actual equipment rather than stopping at theory.
An official from the Yeongjong-gu Youth Center said, “We are grateful to the members of the Unnam 119 Safety Center for leading a realistic joint drill and supporting substantive education,” adding, “Going forward, based on close cooperation with related agencies such as the jurisdictional fire station, we will do our best to create a safe facility environment that youth and residents can always use with peace of mind.”
