The Michuhol Haksan Cultural Center (Director Jung Hyung-seo) of Incheon’s Michuhol-gu District (Mayor Kim Jung-sik) is recruiting participants for the ‘2026 Humanities on the Road & Wisdom School.’ Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and jointly organized by the Michuhol Haksan Cultural Center, the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service, and the Korean Library Association, the program is designed to encourage residents to take a fresh look at the nature and urban surroundings of their own neighborhoods through the lens of the humanities. Prompting participants to view familiar everyday spaces from a new perspective is the goal that runs through both programs.

The basic course, ‘Humanities on the Road, the Power to Discover Your Neighborhood: Coexistence and Reflection,’ runs from Aug. 12 to Nov. 4, every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Michuhol Haksan Cultural Center (126 Inha-ro). It is an ecological humanities course that examines the relationships in which nature, humans and diverse forms of life come together, using the city’s parks, alleys, streams and forests as its medium. Participants combine lectures with field trips and documentation activities, viewing their familiar neighborhoods anew and cultivating a humanistic sensibility in everyday life.
The advanced course, ‘Wisdom School, Michuhol Connected by Waterways: Reading the City and Imagining the Future,’ runs from July 16 to Oct. 15, every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Its distinctive feature is that it begins with the meaning of the name Michuhol—’a town where water comes and goes’—and examines, through a humanistic approach, the history and spatial changes of a city that has formed along its waterways.
The Wisdom School consists of a tour of the city of Michuhol, a visit to Seoul’s Seongbukcheon Stream, a cognitive-mapping exercise, and a workshop on envisioning the future city. The sessions are centered on the Michuhol Haksan Cultural Center (126 Inha-ro), with local field trips scheduled for Aug. 29 and Sept. 5. The times and locations of the field trips will be announced later.

The two programs operate independently while also flowing into a single continuum. Where ‘Humanities on the Road’ is a course for understanding the spaces of life through neighborhoods and nature, the ‘Wisdom School’ represents an advanced stage that expands that gaze to the city as a whole, reflecting together on Michuhol’s transformation and future.
The instructors are made up of experts in their respective fields. ‘Humanities on the Road’ is co-led by Choi Sung-yong, an urban and ecology writer, and Jeon Sung-won, a cultural critic and professor at the Graduate School of Culture at Sungkonghoe University, while the ‘Wisdom School’ is led by Jung Ki-hwang, a Doctor of Architecture and head of the Sisihan Research Institute.
Both programs are open to any adult living in the area, and participation is free. Recruitment is limited to 20 participants per program on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications can be made via the QR code provided on each program’s promotional material or by phone. For further details, contact the Michuhol Haksan Cultural Center at ☎032-866-3994 for ‘Humanities on the Road,’ and at ☎032-866-3993 for the ‘Wisdom School.’
