The Dohwa 2·3-dong Residents’ Autonomy Council (Chairperson Jeong Hyang-ok) in Michuhol-gu District held a “Watermelon Sharing for Senior Centers” event on July 16, the first day of Chobok, delivering watermelons to 16 senior centers in the neighborhood.

The event was organized to check on the health of local senior citizens worn down by the continuing heat wave and to encourage them to stay cool and healthy through the summer.

On the day, council members personally visited each senior center to deliver watermelons, listen to residents’ concerns and check on their well-being.

One senior at a center said, “The heat had worn down both my body and spirit, but having the residents’ council come in person to bring cool watermelon and keep me company was a great source of strength.”

Chairperson Jeong Hyang-ok said, “Though it’s a small gesture, I hope it helps our seniors get through this heat wave,” adding, “We will continue to show consistent care and practice sharing so that our elderly residents can enjoy a healthy and happy old age.”

The Dohwa 2·3-dong Residents’ Autonomy Council has taken the lead each year in sharing and volunteer activities for vulnerable groups and senior citizens, working to put neighborly love into practice and build a warm local community. Such self-driven activities, in which residents look after their neighbors, are functioning as part of the local safety net that protects vulnerable groups from seasonal hazards like heat waves.
