The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) will conduct the 2026 Incheon Metropolitan City Social Survey of a sample of 9,000 households from August 3 to September 16. The survey aims to grasp changes in residents’ living conditions and perceptions in order to design policies tailored to the region’s characteristics.

Incheon conducts a social survey every year to continuously track changes across society as a whole, including residents’ living environment, attitudes and quality of life. As a regional statistical survey, its results serve as basic data for shaping policies that reflect local conditions and for improving administrative services.

The survey covers a sample of 9,000 households that include members aged 13 or older residing in Incheon as of August 1, 2026. It spans 11 sectors covering the full range of residents’ lives — population, households and family, health, education, labor, income and consumption, housing and transportation, environment, safety, social integration, and culture and leisure — and consists of a total of 172 indicators. It combines objective indicators drawn from administrative data with items asking about residents’ living conditions and their perceptions in each field.

This year’s survey revised its framework to reflect shifting social conditions. The survey system was supplemented so that changes in local conditions following the reorganization of the administrative structure can be analyzed on a continuing basis, and questions were added to secure basic data needed for policies on women and youth. In particular, new questions asking whether residents use artificial intelligence (AI) services and how those services affect them were added, marking the first time that the impact of technological change permeating daily life on residents’ lives will be captured in the statistics.

The survey is conducted through in-person interviews, with enumerators visiting the sampled households directly. To make participation more convenient, an online survey is also being operated in parallel, allowing households that are difficult to visit to respond via the internet.

After data analysis and verification, the results will be released on the Incheon Data Portal (https://data.incheon.go.kr) in late December this year, and will also be provided through the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS) in the first half of next year. Incheon plans to share the analysis with the relevant departments and use it as basic data for shaping and carrying out policies in each field and for evaluating policy outcomes.

This survey carries particular significance in that residents’ responses become the basis for policy. The higher the response rate, the closer the resulting statistics are to actual daily life, and the more accurate the welfare, education and safety policies that residents experience firsthand become.

Song Tae-jin, Incheon’s director of policy planning, said, ‘The social survey is an important survey for understanding changes in residents’ lives and the shape of the local community,’ adding, ‘We ask for the active participation and cooperation of the surveyed households so that more accurate statistics can be produced.’
