The acclaimed Korean original musical (Laundry) will be staged at the Grand Theater of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center from Aug. 28 to 30. The work, cherished for two decades in the small theaters of Daehangno, now comes to meet audiences in Incheon.

The Incheon Culture and Arts Center announced that it will bring the original musical to its Grand Theater stage from Aug. 28 to 30.

The musical began in 2003 as a graduation project of the School of Drama at the Korea National University of Arts, and had its official premiere in 2005 at the Byeoloreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea. It went on to become one of Daehangno’s signature long-running productions, and last year it marked its 20th anniversary — a rare feat for a small-theater musical. The ‘Musical Ppallae 20th Anniversary Concert’ sold out all 3,000 seats within just nine minutes of ticketing opening, reaffirming the show’s enduring popularity.

The story unfolds around the chance encounter between Na-young, an office worker who has moved to a Seoul neighborhood, and Solongo, a young man from Mongolia. Na-young, who came to the city carrying a dream of becoming a writer and now works at a bookstore, meets her neighbor Solongo while hanging laundry on the rooftop.

Na-young, facing the threat of unfair dismissal, and Solongo, on the verge of being thrown out without even receiving his overdue wages — these weary, wounded characters worn down by hard life in Seoul embrace one another’s pain and rise again. Portraying the solidarity and comfort of ordinary people, the story continues to resonate across generations more than 20 years after its premiere. In that its narrative burrows into the emotions of everyday life rather than relying on elaborate stagecraft, and thus touches the lives of its audience, this run is expected to give the people of Incheon, too, an occasion to reflect on their own days.

An official of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center said, ‘The musical Ppallae is a work that warmly captures everyday stories anyone can relate to,’ adding, ‘We hope it will be a time that delivers deep emotion and comfort.’

Tickets can be booked through the Incheon Culture and Arts Center website and NOL Ticket. Paid members of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center, as well as middle school, high school, university, and graduate students aged 14 and over, each receive a 20% discount. For details, contact the Incheon Culture and Arts Center at 032-420-2000.
