The Gangseo-gu Office in Seoul (Mayor Jin Gyo-hun) will run Gender Equality Week from September 1 to 7, presenting a range of programs including a commemorative ceremony, an exhibition and an on-site campaign under the theme “Gender Equality for All, Wider and Deeper.” Designated annually under the Framework Act on Gender Equality, the week has become an occasion for Gangseo-gu to hold resident-participation events aimed at spreading a culture of gender equality, and this year’s lineup ranges widely, from citation awards to a contest ceremony and a street campaign.

The first event to note is the “Gender Equality Week Commemorative Ceremony,” set for 2 p.m. on the 2nd at Ari Hall in Gangseo Atrium. The ceremony will include the presentation of citations to individuals who have contributed to gender equality, followed by an awards ceremony for the previously held content contest, as well as a talk concert on gender equality designed to let attendees engage with the subject in a relaxed atmosphere.

The “Gender Equality Content Contest,” whose winners will be honored at the ceremony, ran for about a month from June 15 to July 24. Entries came in various formats, including short-form videos, posters and cartoons, and winning works will receive a combined total of 2 million won in prize money. The district said the contest was designed to let residents express the sometimes-weighty topic of practicing gender equality in daily life through their own creative approaches.

The events are not limited to the indoor ceremony. From the 1st to the 4th, an exhibition will be held in the lobby of the district office’s main building, allowing visitors to view the contest’s winning entries in person, giving residents passing through a natural opportunity to encounter works on the themes of everyday gender equality practices and violence prevention. Then, at 2 p.m. on the 4th, a “Gender Equality Practice and Violence Prevention Campaign” will take place around Hwagok Station. The campaign will combine publicity on preventing sexual and domestic violence with activities to curb prostitution and raise awareness, along with information on major gender equality policies, and is expected to have a tangible preventive effect.

Gangseo-gu Mayor Jin Gyo-hun said, “Through this event, I hope a culture of gender equality takes deeper root in our society,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to build a city where all residents feel respected and happy.” As discussions on gender equality continue across society, such ongoing campaigns and participatory events at the local government level are expected to serve as a practical catalyst for shifting public awareness, separate from institutional approaches. Further details on the event are available from the Gangseo-gu Office’s Childbirth and Childcare Division at 02-2600-6762.
