The public health center of Incheon’s Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jeong) held a dementia prevention campaign for local residents at the Aug. 26 opening ceremony of the Yongyu Complex Community Center, and introduced the ‘Mobile Dementia Prevention Classroom’ program to be run at the facility. The measure is aimed at allowing residents of Yongyu, an area with relatively weak health care infrastructure, to access dementia prevention services closer to home.

At the campaign, residents were introduced to dementia screening, support services for dementia patients, and cognitive health programs run by the Dementia Relief Center, along with practical information such as foods and exercises that help prevent dementia.
In particular, a session was arranged for residents to get an advance experience of the ‘Mobile Dementia Prevention Classroom (Brain Talk-Talk with ICT),’ which will run every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Yongyu Public Health Branch on the first floor of the Yongyu Complex Community Center. The program was designed to increase leisure activities and boost cognitive abilities among local senior citizens.
The program is characterized by dementia-prevention exercises and functional games conducted using the smart touch table ‘Happy Table’ and the cognitive rehabilitation training device ‘Cotras D,’ under the guidance of occupational therapists from the public health center.
One senior citizen who tried the program said, “The public health center was far away and hard to use, but it was great to be able to take part in the dementia prevention program at the nearby Yongyu Public Health Branch.” The person added, “It was refreshing since it was my first time playing this kind of game, and I enjoyed participating while competing and cooperating with others.”
Jeong Han-sook, head of the Yeongjong-gu public health center, said, “Considering the characteristics of the Yongyu area, where access to medical services is low, we pushed forward with the mobile dementia prevention classroom so that residents can take part in dementia prevention programs close to home.” She added, “We will continue to work to run various programs for dementia prevention and health promotion among Yongyu area residents.”
