The Incheon Metropolitan City government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) has named art historian Choi Yeol as the main prize winner and Noh Jun-eui, director of the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, as the special prize winner of the 13th Seoknam Lee Kyung-sung Art Theory Award, established to honor Seoknam Lee Kyung-sung, who laid the cornerstone of Korean art criticism and museology. Both recipients have devoted their lives to the study and practice of modern and contemporary Korean art, and the awards carry the meaning of reflecting, together with citizens, on the long years of dedication that built the foundations of art, rather than on any dazzling achievement.

The Incheon Metropolitan City government announced that it has selected art historian Choi Yeol as the main prize winner and Noh Jun-eui, director of the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, as the special prize winner of the 13th Seoknam Lee Kyung-sung Art Theory Award.

The selection followed a two-stage process in which the Seoknam Lee Kyung-sung Art Theory Award steering committee (chaired by Kim Bok-gi, publisher of Art in Culture) recommended candidates, and a separately formed jury (chaired by art critic Yoon Jin-sup) conducted the review and deliberation.

Choi Yeol, the main prize recipient, is a scholar who has steadily researched the history of modern and contemporary Korean art over many years and broadened the horizons of original criticism. Focusing on the pains of the times and the social role of art, he has amassed extensive writings and academic achievements, and was recognized for his contribution to building the foundations of Korean art theory. The jury explained its choice by describing Choi as ‘a diligent scholar who has devoted his life to the study of modern and contemporary Korean art, contributing to the development of Korean art history and art criticism through wide-ranging research, writing and critical activity,’ and as ‘an important figure who established research standards grounded in empirical materials and laid the groundwork for the study of art history.’

Noh Jun-eui, the special prize recipient, has consistently supported experimental endeavors in contemporary art and served as a bridge connecting the public with art through the operation and planning of the museum. He was especially highly regarded for his contribution to expanding the diversity of the Korean art world and advancing culture and the arts. The jury assessed Noh as ‘a devoted contributor who has pioneered the culture of the Total Museum, leaving pioneering achievements in discovering and nurturing young artists and in international exchange, and greatly contributing to the formation and growth of contemporary Korean art.’

The Seoknam Lee Kyung-sung Art Theory Award was established to honor the spirit of Lee Kyung-sung, who served as director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, among other posts, and laid the foundations of Korean art criticism and museology. It is awarded each year to art theorists, researchers, critics and administrators who have produced notable achievements.

Kim Tae-ik, director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, said, ‘This year’s recipients are figures who have embodied the passion for art and scholarly practice that Lee Kyung-sung pursued throughout his life,’ adding, ‘I hope this ceremony will be a meaningful occasion to honor the contributions of the two recipients and to seek out the future of the Korean art world together.’

The 13th award ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 in front of Seoknam Hall at the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum. Certificates will be presented to the recipients, and the main prize winner will additionally receive prize money.
