Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jung) in Incheon is launching a large-scale safety inspection of 94 gas-related facilities in the district ahead of the Chuseok holiday. The inspection runs for 17 days from Sept. 7 to Sept. 23, with the district aiming to head off gas accidents that could occur during the holiday period.

Holiday periods are considered a time of heightened risk for gas accidents. Staff overseeing facilities thin out as people travel home or take trips, while demand for gas for cooking and heating actually rises. The district scheduled the inspection before the holiday begins in order to eliminate safety blind spots during a period when oversight tends to loosen. The focus is on minimizing sources of risk while residents visit their hometowns or spend the holiday at home.
The inspection covers all 94 facilities in the district, including city gas filling stations, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations and storage sites, and high-pressure gas manufacturing facilities. Rather than conducting the inspection with its own personnel alone, the district will examine sites jointly with the Korea Gas Safety Corp. and other specialized agencies. According to the district, the participation of technical personnel from these agencies makes substantive inspection possible, going beyond visual checks.
Five items will receive focused attention on site. Inspectors will examine how gas equipment is actually being used, whether facilities meet legal standards, whether regular inspections have been completed on schedule, and whether facilities found noncompliant in earlier inspections have in fact been brought up to standard. Enrollment in gas accident liability insurance has also been added to the list. Insurance coverage is not a measure that prevents accidents, but it was included because it determines whether residents who suffer damage can receive actual compensation when an accident occurs.
Follow-up measures will vary according to the severity of the findings. Minor issues are to be corrected on site the day of the inspection, while serious legal violations will be subject to separate administrative action. Combining immediate correction with administrative measures is intended to speed up remediation with the holiday close at hand, placing the emphasis on removing actual risk factors rather than simply documenting deficiencies.
Mayor Son Hwa-jung said, “Through this safety inspection ahead of the Chuseok holiday, we will further strengthen the safety of gas facilities,” adding, “We will continue to do our utmost to make Yeongjong-gu a safer place where residents can live with peace of mind.”
Yeongjong-gu is home to an airport and a port, and related facilities and floating populations are both growing. With travel demand concentrated during the holiday period, the importance of safety management for infrastructure is correspondingly greater. The inspection is expected to serve as groundwork supporting residents’ everyday safety during the holiday.
