The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it will hold the ‘2026 Incheon Cultural Festival for Residents from North Korea’ on Sept. 12 at the north plaza of Dongincheon Station in Songhyeon-dong, Jemulpo-gu.

The festival was planned to create a venue for sharing, preserving and developing the culture of residents from North Korea, thereby boosting their pride and consoling the pain of displacement and family separation. About 2,800 displaced people live in Incheon, and the festival reflects the historical and geographical character of a city that has stood alongside them.

This year’s festival carries added significance as it falls within the week marking the 76th anniversary of the Incheon Landing Operation. Some 1,000 people are expected to attend, including residents from North Korea living in the Incheon area, North Korean defectors, ordinary citizens, and displaced Northerners invited from across the country through the offices of the five North Korean provinces in 16 cities and provinces.

The event will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day at the north plaza of Dongincheon Station. Pre-ceremony activities will feature a variety of hands-on programs such as rice-cake pounding and tasting and folk games, along with performances by a band of residents from North Korea and intangible cultural heritage performances from the five North Korean provinces. This will be followed by the main program, including an opening performance, commendations for persons of merit, and congratulatory remarks by key figures, capped by a performance by a North Korean defectors’ art troupe and celebratory stages by Miss Trot alumna singer Jeon Yeong-rang and singer Lee Chang-hwi.

Mayor Park Chan-dae said, ‘I hope this festival, which prays for peace and an end to the war, will become a hometown of the heart for residents from North Korea and a place of hope for younger generations to carry on the wish for reunification.’ He added, ‘In particular, together with the cultural festival for residents from North Korea, we will reflect on the meaning of the Incheon Landing Operation and widely promote the value of Incheon as an international city of peace shared by its 3 million citizens.’

Meanwhile, the ’76th Anniversary Week of the Incheon Landing Operation,’ held from Sept. 10 to 15, will feature 28 diverse events across Incheon under the theme ‘Freedom We Defended Together, Incheon a City of Peace,’ including commemorative ceremonies and events of gratitude and remembrance. This cultural festival is one of its flagship events and is expected to serve as an occasion to deliver a message of intergenerational harmony and peace to citizens close at hand.
