Incheon Buses Run Normally Despite Seoul City Bus Strike

2,543 city and metropolitan buses unaffected... only Seoul-transfer commuters advised to take note

Posted Article No. 58517

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that even if Seoul’s city buses go on strike on the 16th, Incheon’s city and metropolitan buses will operate normally without any disruption. Aside from some residents who transfer during their commute to and from Seoul, public transit users are expected to face no inconvenience.

Incheon currently operates a total of 2,543 vehicles across 346 routes, including city buses, metropolitan buses, and village and public buses. Of these, city buses other than the metropolitan buses run only within Incheon’s boundaries, and the 366 vehicles across 32 metropolitan bus routes bound for Seoul, such as express-seat and M-buses, will also run as scheduled. Residents who use these routes can board buses just as they normally do.

There will be no disruption to travel within Incheon because none of Seoul’s city bus routes directly connect with Incheon. Even if Seoul’s city buses stop running, travel within Incheon will remain unaffected under this structure.

However, commuters who take a metropolitan bus or urban railway from Incheon into Seoul and then transfer to a Seoul city bus may experience some inconvenience during the transfer, so caution is advised. In such cases, it is helpful to check alternative transportation options for the Seoul leg in advance.

To minimize inconvenience to residents, the Incheon Metropolitan Government plans to send out an emergency text message with relevant details should Seoul’s city buses actually go on strike. Earlier, labor and management of Incheon’s city buses reached a final settlement on this year’s wage and collective bargaining last month, resolving strike concerns well in advance, so the stability of public transit operations in the Incheon area has already been secured.

Park Sung-soon, Director-General of the Incheon Transportation Policy Bureau, said, ‘Incheon’s city and metropolitan buses will operate normally without disruption, so residents may use them as usual,’ adding, ‘We will continuously monitor developments regarding the Seoul city bus strike and do our utmost to ensure that residents are not inconvenienced.’
