Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it will accept nominations for the 44th Incheon Metropolitan City Culture Award through Sept. 23, in a search for citizens who have contributed to promoting the region’s culture and the arts and raising its profile.
Now in its 44th year, the Incheon Culture Award is regarded as the region’s most long-standing and prestigious honor. Awards are given in nine categories in all: scholarship, literature, fine arts, performing arts, traditional arts, cultural content, tourism, sports and journalism. The award is drawing local attention for shining a light on those who have quietly served as the foundation of the region’s culture and the arts.
Those eligible to submit nominations include the Mayor of Incheon; the heads of organizations and institutions related to each category; the presidents and deans of junior colleges and above; the superintendent of education and the heads of counties and districts; and any group of 50 or more Incheon citizens signing jointly. Allowing citizens to nominate candidates directly through a joint signature ensures that the award is not merely a government-led honor but also a channel through which citizens themselves can recommend those who have served the region.
To qualify, a nominee must have resided continuously in Incheon for at least three years as of the date of the announcement and must not have previously received a culture award at the city or provincial level or higher. The award targets those who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the region’s culture and the arts in their respective fields, and Incheon-based artists who have made the city’s name widely known through active work in other regions are also eligible for nomination.
Required documents include a recommendation form in the prescribed format, a record of achievements, a résumé, a field-survey verification form, an abstract of the resident registration (including changes of address), a color half-length photo file in ID-card format, and any other supporting materials on achievements needed for the review. Submissions can be made through Sept. 23 by visiting or mailing the Incheon Cultural Policy Division.
After the submission deadline, Incheon will finalize the recipients in November through a first-round review by subcommittees composed of experts in each category, followed by a final review by a comprehensive review committee. Recipients will be notified individually in early December, and the award ceremony is scheduled to be held in December.
Park Hyuk, head of the city’s Cultural Policy Division, said, ‘The Incheon Culture Award is the most meaningful honor bestowed on those who have elevated Incheon’s cultural and artistic pride and completed the city’s dignity,’ adding, ‘We ask for the active interest and support of related institutions, organizations and citizens so that many outstanding contributors may be nominated for this glorious position that carries tradition and symbolism.’
