The Incheon Metropolitan City Museum (Mayor Park Chan-dae) has produced and distributed Braille guides for visually impaired visitors to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunmaengjeongeum. The Incheon Metropolitan City Museum announced that it had produced and distributed Braille guides to protect the cultural rights of visually impaired people and to enhance their convenience during visits. The guides were prepared to mark the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunmaengjeongeum, the Korean Braille system for the visually impaired.
Hunmaengjeongeum is a Korean Braille script devised by Songam Park Doo-sung so that visually impaired people could also read and write Korean, and it was promulgated on November 4, 1926. Original and scientific in design yet easy to learn, it has long been used in the literacy and communication of the visually impaired.
The Braille guides include information needed for a visit, such as visitor guidance and precautions, museum facilities, and directions. In particular, they feature tactile maps that show the main facilities and movement routes on each floor from the first to the third floor, allowing visually impaired visitors to feel their way with their hands and independently grasp the museum’s internal layout and the arrangement of its facilities.
The guides are placed on a display stand next to the museum’s information desk, and anyone can use them freely without any separate request or inquiry. This carries significance in that it further enhances the autonomy and accessibility of the visit, since visually impaired people can obtain visitor information without having to ask for assistance.
Kim Tae-ik, director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, said, ‘These Braille guides were prepared to honor the will of Songam Park Doo-sung, who created Hunmaengjeongeum, and to ensure that everyone can use the museum conveniently without being excluded from cultural enjoyment.’ He added, ‘Going forward, we will enhance cultural accessibility for people with disabilities at the Incheon Museum Park as well, and create a museum environment that all citizens can enjoy together.’
