The Gwacheon National Science Museum (director Lee Chung-won) will visit four small elementary schools in the Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon regions from September 3 to 11, offering science lectures and hands-on programs. The initiative aims to narrow gaps in access to science culture that stem from a school’s size or location.

Through a greater-Seoul-area school tour titled ‘Small Schools, Big Questions,’ the Gwacheon National Science Museum is broadening opportunities for students at small schools to encounter science up close. The program is designed to raise students’ interest in and curiosity about science while easing disparities in science-culture experiences that can arise depending on a school’s size and location, and to communicate directly with schools on the ground.

The four schools to be visited are Goksu Elementary School in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province (September 3); Seoul Deungyang Elementary School in Gangseo-gu, Seoul (September 4); Ganghwa Elementary School in Incheon (September 10); and Bukpo Elementary School on Baengnyeong Island in Ongjin-gun, Incheon (September 11). At each school, the director of the Gwacheon National Science Museum will personally deliver a science lecture pitched to elementary students, spanning physics, chemistry, life science and earth science, alongside a mobile science exhibit called ‘Sci-POP,’ which lets students verify scientific principles with their own hands.

Goksu Elementary School (principal Jeon Hye-kyung), the first stop, is a small rural school in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, that runs a variety of cultural and arts programs; 32 students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades will take part. Seoul Deungyang Elementary School (principal Choi Seon-cheol), a small school in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, is strengthening tailored education under the vision of ‘Deungyang On future education, growing together through learning and sharing,’ with 43 fifth- and sixth-grade students participating.

In the Incheon region, Ganghwa Elementary School (principal Ha Sang-dae) actively runs AI and digital education and future-classroom programs built on its long history and tradition, and 46 sixth-grade students will join. The final stop, Bukpo Elementary School (principal Lee Du-seong), is located on Baengnyeong Island, the northernmost point of the West Sea, and offers ecological education drawing on the area’s natural environment as well as AI and edu-tech education; 29 students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades will take part.

The director of the Gwacheon National Science Museum said, ‘Every student, regardless of a school’s size or location, should be able to experience diverse science culture,’ adding, ‘By visiting schools in person to listen to students’ questions and share stories about science, I hope to create opportunities for them to feel science is more approachable.’

Using this tour as a starting point, the Gwacheon National Science Museum plans to expand on-site communication with ‘small but strong schools’ that run distinctive educational activities, and to lay the groundwork for continued cooperation between schools and the museum. For students in areas far from city centers or with few pupils—where hands-on science opportunities have been relatively limited—the chance to encounter a professional science museum’s lectures and exhibits within their own schools carries significant meaning.
