Gwacheon National Science Museum Opens Fall-Semester Children’s Science Courses… 18 All-New Programs

Weekend classes over six sessions from Sept. 5 to Oct. 25, from hands-on experiments to AI creative experiences

The Gwacheon National Science Museum is launching its fall-semester individual education program, held every weekend from September 5 to October 25. All 18 courses have been newly developed, spanning basic science through artificial intelligence (AI), and offering children experimental and hands-on opportunities that are hard to come by at school or in daily life.

The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) announced that it is opening its fall-semester individual education program, run every weekend across a total of six sessions from September 5 to October 25. A defining feature of this semester is that all 18 courses have been developed anew. Classes are held on Saturday and Sunday mornings (10 a.m.–12 p.m.) and afternoons (2 p.m.–4 p.m.), forming 36 classes in all.

The program focuses on using the museum’s infrastructure to broaden opportunities for inquiry-based experiments that are difficult to access at school or in everyday life. A representative example, the class 〈Exploring the Microscopic World Through the Microscope〉, is designed so that children handle a microscope directly in every session to observe cells and practice techniques such as searching for trace evidence, one of the methods used in forensic science.

Courses that address social issues scientifically have also been prepared. The class 〈A Changing Earth: Scientists Who Investigate Disasters〉 is conducted in partnership with Ewha Womans University’s Hazard Literacy Convergence Education Research Institute. Using topics such as sinkholes, fine dust, and wind power generation, students carry out model experiments, data analysis, and simulations, exploring solutions to environmental problems encountered in real life and experiencing decision-making for themselves.

Courses introducing digital literacy and artificial intelligence are also included. 〈Math Coding Expedition〉 is a class in which preschoolers aged 6 to 7 develop number sense through play activities and experience unplugged coding, learning coding principles without a computer. In the class 〈The AI World I Create〉, students learn the basics of artificial intelligence and prompt engineering—the art of conversing with generative AI—and use these to create their own works such as logos, music, games, and apps. The remaining classes likewise cover a range of fields from basic science to artificial intelligence, and were developed by school level to match children’s development and learning stages.

Such experience-based classes centered on experiments and hands-on practice are expected to give children—who can easily remain confined to theory-focused learning—a chance to touch and observe things directly and cultivate scientific thinking. In particular, having children investigate for themselves from a young age topics that have grown increasingly significant in society, such as environmental disasters and artificial intelligence, is meaningful in fostering problem-solving skills that go beyond the mere transfer of knowledge.

Registration begins with priority enrollment for annual members on August 25 and continues through August 27 on a first-come, first-served basis via the learning management system at the museum’s education hall. A total of 512 spots are open, with 12 to 16 students per class. Tuition is 180,000 won for the six sessions, and annual members receive a 20 percent discount.

Director Lee Chung-won said, ‘As we welcome autumn, the season of harvest, I hope that children will harvest the fruits of learning here at the science museum,’ adding, ‘We will continue to work so that a visit to the museum is always a meaningful and enjoyable experience.’

Detailed information on the composition of and registration for the fall-semester individual education program is available on the Gwacheon National Science Museum website (www.sciencecenter.go.kr).
