Gangseo-gu Launches AI and Space Science Programs for Teens This Summer Break, With 240 Students Taking Part at District Libraries and Starlight Astronomical Science Center Through Aug. 14

From robot coding to generative AI: hands-on learning at three district libraries and the Gangseo Starlight Astronomical Science Center

Posted Article No. 53667

The Gangseo-gu Office in Seoul (led by District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) has launched a series of hands-on educational programs this summer break, using the district’s public libraries and the Gangseo Starlight Astronomical Science Center as venues where local teenagers can learn about artificial intelligence and digital technology close to home. Running through August 14, the program will bring together 240 students from the district — 180 elementary school students and 60 middle school students — for a chance to get first-hand experience with future technologies ranging from robot coding to generative AI. The initiative has drawn local interest for turning neighborhood libraries and a science center, both within walking distance and requiring no separate academy enrollment, into hubs for learning.

The library-based portion of the program will run at three branches — the Dreaming Children’s Library, Gomdalrae Library and Deungbit Library — for 180 students in grades four through six at elementary schools in the district. Each library will hold its own schedule, for a combined total of 12 sessions, with each session lasting 120 minutes. The curriculum covers four themes: building an AI-powered smart home, building an AI robot dog, building an AI-based visual assistance robot, and AI-driven autonomous driving. Using a variety of teaching kits, students will learn how artificial intelligence works and code their own robots, gaining an understanding of the technology through direct experience rather than theory alone.

The program tied to the Gangseo Starlight Astronomical Science Center will run for 60 middle school students in the district, held every Friday for a total of four sessions of 120 minutes each. Using Google’s generative AI model Gemini, students will design their own planets and explore spaceflight technology, as well as code their own spacecraft and exploration robots — an unusual experience that combines artificial intelligence with space science. While the library programs focus more on building robots and the basics of coding, the science center program places greater emphasis on creation and exploration using generative AI.

The program is seen as an attempt to use public infrastructure to narrow the gap in digital technology learning that can otherwise widen during school vacations depending on families’ access to private education. With AI education emerging as a topic of broad social interest, local parents are expected to keep a close eye on the initiative, given that it lets students access relevant instruction at libraries and a science center near their homes at no extra cost. Notably, the program has been split into two tracks tailored to the respective levels of elementary and middle school students — robot coding for one group and generative AI experience for the other. It is also worth noting that libraries and a science center, familiar public facilities, are being repurposed as venues for learning cutting-edge technology.

Gangseo-gu District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said the program was designed to let young people experience future technologies such as AI robotics and space science firsthand at public facilities close to home, adding that the district would continue to develop educational programs that make use of local resources to help teenagers build the skills to become talented members of the future workforce.

Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the websites of the Gangseo-gu Integrated Library system and the Gangseo Starlight Astronomical Science Center, respectively, where detailed schedules for each institution can also be found.
