Ganghwa-gun announced that it will hold the 4,358th Gaecheon Daeje rite and the torch-lighting ceremony for the 107th National Sports Festival at the Chamseongdan Altar on Mount Mani (Manisan) at 10 a.m. on October 3.

The Chamseongdan Altar on Mount Mani is a sacred site of the Korean people, said to have been built by Dangun Wanggeom to offer sacrifices to heaven. Every year on October 3, the county has performed the Gaecheon Daeje here, a heavenly rite praying for the peace of the people and the prosperity of the nation. Its significance runs deep, for it is not merely a local event but a symbolic ceremony that recalls the roots of the nation.

The Chamseongdan Altar also shares a long history with the National Sports Festival. Since the 36th National Sports Festival in 1955, the kindling of the festival’s flame has accompanied the Gaecheon Daeje — a tradition spanning well over half a century. The fact that the spark of the festival, where athletes from across the country compete, is lit on Ganghwa’s Mount Mani has become a special source of pride for local residents.

The heavenly rite, organized by Ganghwa-gun, will be conducted in three parts: the upper, middle, and lower altar rituals. The first libation officiant at the upper altar will be Ganghwa County Governor Park Yong-cheol, the second libation officiant at the middle altar will be Ganghwa County Council Chairman Choi Jung-chan, and the final libation officiant at the lower altar will be Ganghwa Police Station Chief Jeong Jong-du. The ritual will proceed in the following order: the incense-offering rite, the silk-offering rite, the first libation, the second libation, the final libation, the partaking of offerings, the burning of the written prayer, and the burial of offerings.

After the heavenly rite, the Seven Fairies will ascend the Chamseongdan Altar to kindle the flame of the National Sports Festival. The kindled flame will be handed over to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the host of the 107th National Sports Festival, bringing the event to a close.

Meanwhile, the event will be held without spectators to prevent safety accidents. Accordingly, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the event, access to the Chamseongdan area will be restricted to event officials only. The county explained that this measure is intended to protect both the tradition of the flame kindling and the safety of visitors. Inquiries can be directed to the Cultural Events Team of the Culture and Sports Division at Ganghwa-gun (032-930-3577).
