Citizens to Choose the Name of Incheon Museum Park … Second Preference Survey Runs Through September 20

Field Narrowed to Top Three Candidates, Conducted Both Online and Offline … Final Views to Be Gathered at October 30 Public Hearing

Posted Article No. 57790

The Incheon Metropolitan Government is conducting a second name preference survey among citizens through September 20 to decide the official name of the (provisionally titled) Incheon Museum Park, scheduled to open in 2028. The survey is a process for directly confirming which name citizens consider most fitting among the candidates shortlisted through expert review, and the results will serve as key material for selecting the final name.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it will conduct a second citizen name preference survey through September 20 to select the official name of the (provisionally titled) Incheon Museum Park, which is being developed with the goal of opening in 2028.

The (provisionally titled) Incheon Museum Park is a large-scale integrated cultural and arts complex that will bring together a newly built art museum, the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum relocating and expanding to the site, and an arts park in one place. The city is pursuing the development of an integrated name and brand so that, while preserving the distinct character of each facility, citizens can naturally perceive and use the art museum, museum, and park as a single cultural space. Given the scale and character of the facilities, a single name could establish itself as a cultural brand representing Incheon in the years ahead, and the city intends to fill the very process of choosing that name with citizen participation.

This survey aims to gauge preferences among the specific pool of candidates prepared through citizen opinions gathered in the first brand awareness survey conducted in July and subsequent expert review. The city has advanced its brand deliberation in stages, in the following order: the first brand awareness survey, an expert focus group interview (FGI), the second name preference survey, a name selection meeting, a public hearing for citizens, and a project briefing.

In the first brand awareness survey conducted from July 6 to 20, a wide range of opinions was gathered, including expectations for the new cultural and arts complex and views on the future direction of the art museum and museum. Based on these findings, the city reviewed domestic and international cultural facility cases, refined the candidate pool by reflecting citizen proposals, and then held a focus group interview (FGI) on August 5 involving experts in art museum and museum operations as well as in visual and brand fields.

As a result of the FGI evaluation, three of the eight final candidates were shortlisted: ‘Incheon Museum Park’, ‘Museum Port Incheon’, and ‘Incheon Museum+’. ‘Incheon Museum Park’ was rated highly for intuitively conveying the character of the space, ‘Museum Port Incheon’ for capturing the regional identity of a port city and the meaning of cultural exchange, and ‘Incheon Museum+’ for symbolizing a complex and expanded cultural experience.

The second survey asks for opinions not only on the integrated name of the cultural and arts complex but also on the individual names of the newly built art museum and the relocating and expanding museum. The plan is to ensure that the integrated name and the individual facility names are in harmony with one another.

The survey will be conducted both online and offline through September 20. Online participation is available via the Incheon city website and QR codes, while offline participation takes place at cultural and arts institutions and major event venues. In particular, the survey will also be carried out on-site at the ‘2026 Incheon Museum of Art Pre-Project’, broadening opportunities for citizens to take part in person.

The city plans to combine the results of this preference survey with the first survey and expert opinions and use them as key material for selecting the final name. It will then prepare Korean and English name proposals through a name selection meeting, and on October 30 it will hold a public hearing for citizens to share the proposed names and brand design direction and to gather final citizen input.

Jeong Kyeong-won, head of the city’s Culture Infrastructure Division, said: ‘While the first survey let us hear what citizens hope to see in the new cultural space and a variety of opinions on possible names, this stage is about confirming which name is most fitting among the candidates prepared through citizen input and expert review.’ He added: ‘By steadily reflecting the views of citizens and experts, we will create a name and brand that represents Incheon and that anyone can easily remember.’
