The Songdo 5-dong Neighborhood Heads’ Council (Chairwoman Kim Geum-ju) of Yeonsu-gu District has rolled up its sleeves to make the neighborhood cleaner. On the 25th, the council carried out the ‘Our Town Clean Campaign,’ an environmental cleanup activity, at various spots across the district.

On the day, the neighborhood heads focused on collecting abandoned waste and household trash, centering on chronic illegal dumping areas where garbage is repeatedly discarded. They went around in person to spaces closely tied to residents’ daily lives and carried out the cleanup work.

This activity did not stop at simply collecting trash. The council also ran a resource-recycling campaign, informing residents about a resource-recycling shop and conducting awareness-raising efforts to reduce the use of disposable items and cut down on waste. In effect, it broadened the scope of its activities beyond cleaning to spreading an eco-friendly lifestyle culture.

Kim Geum-ju, chairwoman of the Neighborhood Heads’ Council, said, “Through regular environmental cleanup activities, the Neighborhood Heads’ Council will take the lead in creating a clean local community that residents can feel firsthand.”

Kang Ji-haeng, head of Songdo 5-dong, said, “I am grateful to the Neighborhood Heads’ Council for taking the initiative in making the neighborhood cleaner even in the hot weather,” adding, “The dong office will also do its best to create a pleasant living environment.” The campaign, in which neighborhood heads serving as residents’ representatives voluntarily stepped up for environmental cleanup and resource-recycling outreach, is regarded as an example of resident-led, daily-life-oriented environmental activity.
