Environmental cleanup activities were carried out to directly tend to neighborhood areas closely tied to residents’ daily lives. The Songdo 5-dong Block Leaders’ Council (Chair Kim Geum-ju) of Yeonsu-gu District conducted the ‘Our Neighborhood Clean Campaign,’ an environmental cleanup activity, within its jurisdiction on the 25th.

On the day, the block leaders focused their efforts on chronic illegal-dumping areas where trash is repeatedly discarded. They intensively collected long-neglected waste and household garbage, tidying up spaces closely connected to residents’ daily lives.

In particular, this activity went beyond simple cleaning. The Block Leaders’ Council also carried out a resource-recycling campaign, informing residents about the resource-recycling shop and conducting awareness-raising activities to reduce the use of single-use items and cut down on waste, taking the lead in spreading an eco-friendly culture.

Kim Geum-ju, chair of the Block Leaders’ Council, said, “Through regular environmental cleanup activities, the Block Leaders’ Council will take the lead in creating a clean local community that residents can experience firsthand.”

Kang Ji-haeng, head of Songdo 5-dong, said, “I am grateful to the Block Leaders’ Council for setting an example in making a clean neighborhood even in the hot weather,” adding, “The dong office will also do its best to create a pleasant living environment.”

This campaign, which addressed the two tasks of eradicating illegal dumping and promoting resource recycling in one place, is establishing itself as a model case of grassroots environmental practice in which residents tend to their own living environment.
