Gangseo-gu Hosts ‘Green Light Festa’ at Ujangsan Soccer Field — A Downtown Summer Festival Cooling the Heat with Water Gun Play and a Laser Show

On the 4th, Ujangsan Soccer Field Turned Into a Giant Water Playground… 'Walkway of Light' Runs Through the 24th, With a Water Play Area Opening July 31

On July 4, Seoul’s Gangseo-gu (District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon) held its signature summer event, the ‘Green Light Festa,’ at Ujangsan Soccer Field, drawing crowds of families. Combining magic, singing and dance performances with hands-on booths for young children, water gun play and a laser show, the event was designed as a summer festival where children could enjoy water play right in the city without having to travel far. The soccer field was quickly transformed into a giant water playground, and large crowds turned out despite the sweltering heat.

The Ujangsan Soccer Field, where the event took place, was packed shoulder to shoulder with families who had brought their children. On the central stage, a steady stream of performances unfolded, from magic to singing and dance, while off to one side, hands-on booths — hitting targets with water guns and tossing water balloons — were set up so that even toddlers could join in safely. All around, parents who had brought their young children could be seen holding their little ones’ hands, moving from booth to booth and waiting their turn.

The undisputed highlight of the day was the water gun play. The soccer field turned in an instant into a giant water playground, and adults and children alike, water guns in hand, sprayed one another to beat the midsummer heat. Smiles blossomed across the children’s faces, and the adults watching them returned to their own childhood and joined in the fun. District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon also drew attention as he mingled freely with the children, playing with water guns alongside them.

The festival’s energy carried on into the night. From 8:10 p.m., a dazzling laser show heightened the summer-night festive mood. In addition, the ‘Walkway of Light’ ran from the day of the festival through the 24th, adding evening strolls to the daytime water play. With programming spanning day and night, residents of all ages could visit the festival at a time that suited them.

Such downtown water-play events carry real meaning in that, during a summer of prolonged heat waves, they give families with children a safe place to cool off within their own neighborhood — without having to travel all the way to a valley or a beach. Following this festa, Gangseo-gu plans to operate a water play area at Ujangsan Soccer Field from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, August 9, to chase away the sweltering heat, and residents’ interest in these community-focused summer programs running throughout the season is expected to continue.

District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon said, “We have prepared a variety of summer festivals so that our children can enjoy water play right here in the city without having to go far,” adding, “I hope people will come with their children to cool off from the heat and make good memories.”
