The Michuhol-gu District (Mayor Kim Jeong-sik) Comprehensive Volunteer Center (Director Yoo Jung-hyung, hereafter the Center) in Incheon held a ‘Fan of Coolness’ sharing volunteer activity on the 11th as part of its ‘Da-Da-Da Project.’ The event saw migrant-background residents step forward not as recipients of volunteer services but as the ones providing care to local senior citizens.

About 20 migrant-background residents, including members of multicultural families, foreign workers, marriage migrants and international students, took part in the day’s activity. Participants made fans by hand using the napkin art technique and delivered them to senior citizens at local senior centers, wishing them a healthy summer.
The ‘Da-Da-Da Project’ is a program designed to enable migrant-background residents to take part as the main agents of volunteer work. It operates under the slogan “Diverse neighbors, doing diverse activities, all enjoying together.”
Center Director Yoo Jung-hyung said, “I hope the fans, made with sincerity, will offer a small help to the senior citizens in getting through a healthy summer.” He added, “We will continue to carry out various volunteer activities so that migrant-background residents can keep communicating with the local community and practicing sharing.”
The activity is regarded as a case showing that migrant-background residents can move beyond being recipients of assistance to become volunteer agents who reach out first to the local community. Amid local conditions in which the multicultural population continues to grow, such two-way sharing is expected to serve as a channel that promotes integration between migrants and long-term residents.
