The Sindo Peace Bridge, a sea bridge connecting Yeongjong Island with Sindo in Bukdo-myeon, Ongjin County (Governor Jang Jeong-min), held its opening ceremony on July 14 and entered official operation. With the opening of the bridge, which spans a total of 3.26 kilometers, the living zone of residents in Sindo, Sido and Modo in Bukdo-myeon is shifting from one centered on sea routes dependent on passenger ferries to one centered on roads.

Ongjin County said it held the opening ceremony that day at the Sindo Peace Bridge rest park, with officials from the central government and Incheon Metropolitan City as well as local residents in attendance.

Until now, residents of Sindo, Sido and Modo have faced difficulties getting around, as ferry service was frequently suspended depending on weather conditions such as fog and rough seas. The opening of the Sindo Peace Bridge is expected to greatly ease such inconvenience, while also improving access to medical, educational, administrative and cultural services.

The bridge’s opening is expected to bring benefits beyond simple transportation convenience. With significantly improved access to the greater Seoul metropolitan area and Incheon International Airport, an increase in tourist visits and a boost to sales of local specialty products and the tourism industry are expected, with ripple effects likely to be felt across the local economy as a whole.

Ongjin County Governor Jang Jeong-min said that day, “The Sindo Peace Bridge is not simply a bridge connecting an island to the mainland, but a road of hope that will raise residents’ quality of life and create new growth engines for the region,” adding, “In keeping with the promise I made upon taking office to be a ‘governor attuned to daily life who changes residents’ inconvenient days,’ I will work even harder to expand living infrastructure and improve settlement conditions in ways residents can genuinely feel.”

Governor Jang went on to mention residents of Jangbongdo, who are still experiencing transportation inconvenience, saying, “For the residents of Jangbongdo, who still face inconvenience due to transportation conditions, I will concentrate all administrative capacity and cooperate closely with Incheon Metropolitan City so that the ‘Jangbong-Modo connecting bridge construction project,’ which is currently undergoing a preliminary feasibility study, can move forward as soon as possible.” If Jangbongdo, the last remaining island in Bukdo-myeon, is connected by land, it would complete the land-linking of the entire Bukdo region of Ongjin County, and attention in the region is expected to focus on whether the follow-up project moves forward.

In response to the increased tourism demand and changes in the transportation environment expected following the opening of the Sindo Peace Bridge, Ongjin County plans to continue expanding tourism infrastructure and maintaining facilities such as roads and parking lots. The county also plans to cooperate with related agencies to create a transportation environment in which both residents and tourists can use the bridge safely and conveniently.
