The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) will present ‘Call of the Moon,’ an immersive science and culture performance, on Aug. 16 at Korea’s largest planetarium. Blending music, science and cutting-edge visual technology, the special summer-vacation program lets visitors experience space exploration as if they were taking part in it firsthand.

The Gwacheon National Science Museum announced that it will hold ‘Call of the Moon,’ an immersive science and culture performance, on Aug. 16 to mark the summer vacation season. The show is a new type of science-culture content designed to give audiences the sensation of personally taking part in space exploration by fusing music, science and advanced visual technology.

The Dome Concert is one of the museum’s flagship signature events, a science-culture performance that makes the most of the distinctive features of Korea’s largest planetarium. This year it runs three times in total—in May, August and December—under the themes of artificial intelligence and lunar exploration, with ‘Call of the Moon’ serving as the second installment.

‘Call of the Moon’ goes beyond the format of a lecture or talk concert, combining performing arts with science content in an immersive science musical. Cosmic imagery filling the massive 25-meter-diameter dome merges with the live performance of musical actors, giving audiences the vivid sense of immersion of actually joining a space voyage.

The performance unfolds the past and future of humanity’s lunar exploration through music and storytelling—from the first Moon landing in 1969, to the Artemis Project being pursued by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and on to the future construction of a lunar base. Audience-participation science experiments are also held, offering an easy and entertaining way to understand phenomena such as the changing phases of the Moon, lunar eclipses and how craters form. After the performance ends, weather permitting, participants move to the observatory for a celestial observation program.

This performance accommodates 200 people and begins at 7 p.m., after the museum closes for the day. Anyone in elementary school or older may take part, and the participation fee is 10,000 won per person. Online advance reservations open at 10 a.m. on Aug. 6, and detailed schedules and reservation methods can be found on the Gwacheon National Science Museum’s official website (www.sciencecenter.go.kr).

Lee Chung-won, director of the Gwacheon National Science Museum, said, ‘This performance does not stop at explaining science; it is a show in which audiences experience the universe directly,’ adding, ‘We will use the overwhelming spatial presence of Korea’s largest planetarium and advanced imaging to offer visitors a special experience.’ He continued, ‘We will keep presenting a wide range of content that fuses science with culture and the arts, so that the public can encounter science in a more familiar and enjoyable way.’

For students and families on vacation, the performance is expected to be an opportunity to experience with all five senses the space exploration they had only encountered in textbooks, broadening their interest in science.
