The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) carried out an on-site inspection of fishing-village and fishing-port projects across Ganghwa-gun and Yeongjong-gu from August 10 to 11. The move is aimed at responding proactively to summer disasters and minimizing damage to aquaculture farms caused by heat waves and high water temperatures.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it conducted an on-site inspection of fishing-village and fishing-port projects across Ganghwa-gun and Yeongjong-gu from August 10 to 11, in order to respond proactively to summer disasters and to revitalize fishing communities.

The inspection covered a total of nine fishing ports: five in Ganghwa-gun (Seondu, Hupo, Oepo, Janggot and Changhu ports) and four in Yeongjong-gu (Gwangmyeong, Daemuui, Deokgyo and Sammok ports). The city directly checked the progress of fishing-village and port regeneration projects as well as settlement-infrastructure works, while also reviewing the safety management of workers at construction sites and listening to on-site difficulties, focusing on strengthening the substance of the projects.

Fishing ports are both the livelihood base of fishers and a living space for local residents. Accordingly, the city also carried out a comprehensive safety inspection of local fishing-port facilities, examining their management condition in detail so that fishers and residents can use the ports safely.

In particular, this inspection focused on the ongoing challenges of the recent prolonged heat wave and high water temperatures. Rising water temperatures can lead to the mass die-off of farmed fish, inevitably causing heavy losses for fishing households. To minimize this, the city concurrently conducted a special inspection of aquaculture farms. It checked the operation of high-water-temperature response equipment, shared farm management tips on site, and maintained an emergency contact system in preparation for crisis situations, sparing no effort in responding to summer natural disasters.

Kim Ik-jung, director-general of the city’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Bureau, said, ‘Summer is a season in which severe weather such as heat waves and typhoons frequently occurs, so safety management is more important than anything else.’ He added, ‘Through thorough on-site inspections, we will do our utmost to ensure that local residents can use the fishing ports without inconvenience, and we will continue to concentrate our administrative capacity so that damage to aquaculture farms from the heat wave is minimized.’

This on-site inspection is significant in that it went beyond publicizing achievements and instead identified real risk factors in the fishing field in advance. As climate change makes heat waves and high water temperatures a constant reality, attention is focused on whether the effort will translate into stable livelihoods for fishing-village residents and fishers.
