The Public Procurement Service (PPS), led by Administrator Baek Seung-bo, visited RoEn Surgical Inc. (CEO Kwon Dong-soo) at the KAIST Munji Campus in Daejeon on the 13th to inspect the development site of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based surgical robot and to discuss ways to expand market access for advanced products and support their growth through innovation procurement. Arranged as an extension of the field-centered communication that has continued throughout the year since he took office, the visit focused on broadening the path by which new-industry products reach commercialization using the public market as a stepping stone.

The PPS visited RoEn Surgical Inc., located at the KAIST Munji Campus in Daejeon, on the 13th to examine the development site of the AI surgical robot. During the visit, participants discussed a wide range of measures to support the growth of innovative firms, including the commercialization of advanced technologies and the expansion of market access through the public market.

RoEn Surgical received PPS innovative product designation last year for its ‘kidney-stone surgical robot (Zamenix),’ which precisely fragments and removes kidney stones using AI technology and a laser. The product is currently undergoing a demonstration at the National Medical Center through pilot purchasing.
The innovative product pilot purchasing program is a scheme in which the PPS takes the lead in purchasing innovative products, provides them to public institutions, and verifies their performance in real-world use environments. By having the public sector fill the ‘first-buyer’ gap that firms find difficult to overcome in the early stages of development, the program serves as a catalyst for spreading the public procurement of innovative products. Once performance is proven in a hospital setting, expansion to private medical institutions also becomes much easier.

This visit is part of the field-centered activities that have continued for a year, beginning with the wearable-robot innovation firm that Administrator Baek visited last year in place of holding an inauguration ceremony. The PPS has since placed emphasis on supporting future growth engines by listening directly to the difficulties firms face on-site.

Administrator Baek Seung-bo observed a demonstration of the ‘AI robotic surgery’ that day. He stressed, ‘Since taking office, I have intensively supported firms with innovative technologies and advanced products so that they can pioneer new markets and create future growth engines.’ He added, ‘We will provide all-round support so that new-industry products such as AI and robotics, the core drivers of future competitiveness, can pioneer market access and grow by using the public market as a catalyst.’

The fact that an AI robot performing precision surgery in a medical setting has begun to be used in actual patient treatment through public procurement means that the public can enjoy the benefits of advanced medical technology at an earlier point in time. In effect, the PPS’s innovation procurement is aiming simultaneously at the growth of firms and the improvement of public service quality.
