The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it held a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of National Liberation Day on the 15th at the Grand Performance Hall of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center.

The slogan for this year’s event was set as ‘Eighty-one years lit by the light of liberation, a future in which Incheon will shine overwhelmingly.’ It reflects a commitment to open a new future for Incheon through growth, while reflecting on the true meaning of liberation and the patriotic spirit of the forebears.

Alongside the families of independence patriots and heads of veterans’ organizations, the event was attended by some 1,000 people, including local National Assembly members, city council members, heads of institutions and organizations, and other key figures, as well as citizens. The program proceeded in order, beginning with the pledge to the national flag, followed by a commemorative address by Lee Wan-seok, head of the Incheon branch of the Korea Liberation Association, the awarding of honors to independence patriots, a congratulatory address by Mayor Park Chan-dae, the singing of the Liberation Day song, three cheers of manse, and a celebratory performance.

In the celebratory performance, the Incheon Metropolitan Dance Company presented ‘The Light of Liberation, Knocking on Hope.’ By expressing the joy of liberation and a message of hope through traditional Korean dance, it conveyed to attendees the meaning of liberation and hope for the future.

In his congratulatory address, Mayor Park Chan-dae said, ‘Deeply engraving in our hearts the noble sacrifice and devotion of the forebears who gave their lives to achieve the nation’s independence, the 9th popularly elected Incheon city administration will open a great future for Incheon together with its 3.05 million citizens.’ He went on to emphasize, ‘We will nurture artificial intelligence (AI), bio, culture and energy—which will lead future industries—as Incheon’s own new growth engines, and build a city where young people can fully realize their dreams and potential.’

The ceremony that day did not stop at a commemorative rite but continued into side events in which citizens took part directly. A variety of programs were offered, including writing wishes on a large Taegukgi and a map of Korea, a calligraphy and recitation contest featuring the sayings of independence activists, an experience of an independence fighter’s prison, an independence-army experience with rice balls and misugaru (roasted grain powder), making Liberation Day keyrings, a history quiz, and giving away rose of Sharon seedlings. The aim was to let citizens experience historical events firsthand, sharing the memory of liberation across generations.

At Aetteul Plaza at Incheon City Hall, pinwheel-style small Taegukgi flags and the national flower, the rose of Sharon, were displayed. In addition, an ‘Online Liberation Day’ menu was set up on the Incheon city website to introduce independence activists from the Incheon area recorded on surveillance-target person cards from the Japanese colonial period, allowing citizens who could not attend in person to also take part in the commemoration.
