The Agricultural Technology Center of Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced on the 23rd that Incheon has been finally selected as the host of the 81st National Rural Leaders Convention in 2028.

The National Rural Leaders Convention is a nationwide event where rural leader members from across the country gather in one place to exchange information for the development of agriculture and rural communities and to strengthen harmony and communication among members. This will be the first time the convention is held in Incheon, and it is expected to serve as an occasion to showcase the standing of the region’s agriculture to the whole nation.

After applying to host the convention this past March, the city of Incheon worked closely with the Incheon Metropolitan Federation of the Korean Rural Leaders to carry out its bid activities. The city devoted its efforts to inspecting the conditions for hosting the event, including venues and infrastructure such as accommodations and transportation, and to drawing up a hosting plan that links Incheon’s agricultural, tourism and cultural resources.

On August 13, officials from the Incheon Metropolitan Federation met with Mayor Park Chan-dae and requested city-level support and cooperation for bringing the national convention to Incheon. At the meeting, Mayor Park expressed his gratitude to the farmers working hard for the development of the region’s agriculture and pledged his commitment to supporting the bid and a successful hosting.

Subsequently, on August 20, the host-city selection committee visited Incheon to conduct an on-site inspection. The committee toured key event facilities including the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, reviewed the operating conditions for the event as well as infrastructure such as accommodations and transportation, and comprehensively examined the city’s hosting plan and support measures.

The city of Incheon actively communicated with the selection committee members, presenting its vision for a comfortable and safe convention and a national event of urban-rural cooperation shared by farmers and citizens alike, and after a contest with Jeju, it was finally chosen as the host.

The confirmation of the host city is expected to elevate the standing of Incheon’s agriculture and to serve as an opportunity to introduce the city’s agricultural, tourism and cultural resources to farmers nationwide. In particular, as rural leaders and agricultural officials from across the country visit Incheon, positive effects are anticipated for the local economy in areas such as lodging, dining, transportation and tourism. For residents, this means that visitors arriving during the convention period can translate into demand for local commerce and tourism, leading to tangible economic ripple effects.

Going forward, the city of Incheon plans to establish a basic plan for the convention in cooperation with the Central Federation of the Korean Rural Leaders and the Incheon Metropolitan Federation, and to prepare detailed plans by area, including venues, accommodations, transportation, safety and publicity. In addition, related departments and affiliated agencies will collaborate to prepare for a successful convention.

Lee Hee-jung, director of the Incheon Agricultural Technology Center, said, ‘Bringing this national convention to the city is a meaningful opportunity to showcase Incheon’s agriculture and its farmers to the whole nation,’ adding, ‘Through thorough preparation, we will make it a successful national convention shared by both farmers and citizens.’
