Ongjin County supplies 57,000 quality kimchi cabbage seedlings in Baengnyeong-myeon

34,000 seedlings go to 131 farming households that pre-registered; remaining 23,000 to be sold on-site

Posted Article No. 56197

Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) announced that it will supply a total of 57,000 quality kimchi cabbage seedlings, produced at a certified nursery in Baengnyeong-myeon, to local farming households from Aug. 26 to 31. Of these, 34,000 seedlings will go to 131 households that completed pre-registration, while a separate batch of 23,000 seedlings set aside for households that missed the registration period will be sold on-site.

The supply price was set at 5,000 won per tray of 72 seedlings, about 50% cheaper than the market price. The measure is intended to ease the time and cost burden on farming households of raising their own seedlings and to support stable kimchi cabbage cultivation.

The seedlings being supplied this time are two varieties, ‘Buram Plus’ and ‘Whistle Gold.’ Both varieties are known to be highly resistant to clubroot disease, form heads well, and have excellent storage qualities, making them popular among farming households that grow cabbage for kimchi.

Ongjin County has raised the kimchi cabbage seedlings by systematically managing growing conditions such as temperature and humidity to align with the transplanting season. The measure is aimed at resolving the difficulties farming households face when individually raising seedlings in the summer heat, and the program has drawn a positive response from local farmers every year.

An official from the Ongjin County Agricultural Technology Center said, “We aim to ease the burden on farming households that struggle with seedling cultivation due to summer heat by stably supplying quality seedlings.” The official added, “We will continue to do our utmost to expand the production and supply of quality seedlings suited to local conditions, contributing to stable farming and higher incomes for farmers.”

This supply of quality seedlings is seen as a case of administrative support compensating for the limitations of agricultural conditions in the island region, and it is expected to contribute not only to reducing farming households’ production costs but also to boosting the overall stability of local agriculture ahead of the kimchi-making season.
