Incheon Holds ‘Safety Golden Bell’ for 200 Migrant Workers… Preventing Industrial Accidents Across the Language Barrier

Held as a participatory quiz on industrial, everyday, fire and first-aid safety; 10 Myanmar nationals take top honors

The city of Incheon has held a participatory safety quiz competition for migrant workers, a group easily left in the blind spots of workplace safety because of differences in language and culture. The event was designed to help the foreign workforce that sustains the city’s industrial sites learn safety rules without being held back by language barriers.

Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that on the 6th it held the 「2026 Migrant Workers Safety Quiz Competition – Challenge! Safety Golden Bell」 at the auditorium of the Incheon Migrant Workers Support Center, with some 200 migrant workers taking part.

The event was organized as part of the 「Regional Program to Close the Blind Spots in Preventing Serious Industrial Accidents」, jointly promoted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the city of Incheon. It was planned to prevent industrial accidents and raise safety awareness among migrant workers, who are easily excluded from safety education because of differences in language and culture.

The competition focused on the fields of industrial safety, everyday safety, fire prevention and first aid that workers must know both on the job and in daily life. Alongside O·X questions in which participants moved to the area marking their answer, multiple-choice and short-answer questions were also posed, heightening engagement. In particular, right after each question the related safety rules and accident-response tips were explained in detail, aiming for genuine educational value beyond a mere contest.

Participants, who had honed their knowledge with safety education materials distributed in advance, competed fiercely through preliminary and final rounds, and in the end 10 participants of Myanmar nationality won awards. Beyond the quiz, the day’s event featured a variety of programs including a K-POP congratulatory performance, an awards ceremony and a lucky draw, drawing an enthusiastic response from participants.

This year Incheon has continuously provided tailored industrial safety education for major nationalities such as Myanmar, the Philippines, Nepal, Indonesia and Vietnam. The city plans to further strengthen field-oriented support going forward by expanding hands-on safety training and producing and distributing multilingual safety videos, so that migrant workers can master safety rules without language constraints.

This competition is significant in that it used a participatory format to make up for the limitation of safety education, which can easily end up being one-way communication. The process in which migrant workers solve problems themselves and hear explanations on the spot can translate into real accident-response capability in the field.

Han Kyo-dong, director of the city’s Overseas Koreans Cooperation Division, said, ‘Migrant workers are core members who sustain Incheon’s industrial sites,’ adding, ‘We will continue close, field-centered prevention activities so that no one is left out of safety education because of language differences, and build Incheon into a city where everyone is safe.’
