Incheon Ramps Up All-Out Wildfire Response Ahead of Chuseok Holiday

Rapid-response team to operate from Sept. 15; wildfire prevention headquarters to tighten watch during the holiday

Posted Article No. 58428

The city of Incheon is mounting an all-out response centered on wildfire prevention and surveillance, bracing for the influx of visitors to ancestral graves during the Chuseok holiday and the seasonal rise in autumn hikers. The city plans to activate its response organization in stages before and after the holiday to establish an early-suppression posture and minimize wildfire damage.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it is entering an all-out wildfire response posture centered on prevention and surveillance activities, as the risk of wildfires rises with the increase in visitors to ancestral graves during the Chuseok holiday and greater outdoor activity in the autumn season.

During periods when more citizens head to the mountains for grave visits and hiking, careless handling of open flames or the burning of trash carries a heightened risk of escalating into large-scale wildfires. To head off such risk factors in advance, the city has decided to launch an organized response starting from the run-up to the holiday.

First, the city will operate a ‘wildfire rapid-response team’ from Sept. 15 to 23. The team will carry out on-site prevention activities focused on areas vulnerable to wildfires, while also guiding against illegal burning in areas adjacent to forests and intensively promoting wildfire prevention awareness.

During the same period, the city will conduct advance inspections of its full range of firefighting equipment, including wildfire suppression vehicles, command vehicles, personal suppression gear and fire extinguishers. It will also review its emergency contact system and early-suppression response posture to ensure rapid situation reporting and on-site deployment.

From Sept. 24 to 27, during the main Chuseok holiday, the city will activate a ‘wildfire prevention headquarters’ to further strengthen wildfire surveillance and prevention activities. During this period, it aims to minimize wildfire damage through swift early suppression and cooperation with related agencies.

Because a single moment of carelessness can inflict enormous damage not only on citizens’ lives and property but also on forest resources cultivated over many years, prevention is above all essential. The city is emphasizing that individual citizens’ caution and prompt reporting are the surest way to reduce damage.

Yu Kwang-jo, director-general of the city’s Urban Balance Bureau, stressed, ‘During the Chuseok holiday, more citizens head to the mountains for grave visits and autumn hiking, so special care is needed for wildfire prevention.’ He added, ‘Since a wildfire can cause enormous damage in a single careless moment, we ask that people refrain from using open flames and burning trash when visiting graves, and report any wildfire risk factors immediately if they are found.’
