Incheon City Launches Special Waste Management Plan for Chuseok Holiday

Rapid collection system to run Sept. 24-27… emergency response teams on standby by district

Posted Article No. 58659

Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) is rolling out a Special Waste Management Plan for the Chuseok Holiday to prevent inconvenience to residents caused by the buildup of household waste during the Chuseok holiday period. The plan focuses on establishing and operating a rapid collection system over the four days from September 24, when the holiday begins, through September 27.

Holiday periods are prone to waste accumulation, as the volume of discarded material rises while the operation of collection crews and processing facilities scales back. To fill this gap, Incheon City plans to run a tightly coordinated collection system throughout the four-day holiday and to operate its processing facilities flexibly.

To handle waste efficiently, the intake schedules of major environmental facilities are being adjusted. The Cheongna and Songdo Resource Environment Centers and the Songdo Resource Circulation Center will accept waste normally during the holiday except on September 25 and 27, while the Seoul Metropolitan Landfill and the Incheon Southern Regional Living Resource Recovery Center will permit intake only on September 24. However, intake at the Seoul Metropolitan Landfill is allowed only on public holidays, and the existing ban on direct landfilling remains in effect as before.

Incheon City and its 11 districts (gun and gu) will operate a separate situation room to respond immediately to waste-related complaints during the holiday, and will keep emergency response teams on standby in each district. In addition, the city plans to conduct advance inspections of regional waste processing facilities, while simultaneously improving separate-collection facilities in densely populated areas and intensively inspecting excessive packaging of gift sets, so as to cut off unnecessary waste generation at the source.

That said, detailed collection schedules may vary somewhat depending on the circumstances of each district’s private collection contractors, so residents’ cooperation is needed. Incheon City has asked residents to put out their waste on the designated collection days during the holiday and, in particular, to refrain from discarding waste on Chuseok day itself. Simply observing the timing of disposal, the city noted, can substantially reduce holiday-season nuisances such as waste buildup, foul odors, and damage to the urban appearance.

Choi Myung-hwan, head of the city’s Resource Circulation Policy Division, said, ‘We will do everything possible to advance our waste collection and processing measures so that residents do not suffer any inconvenience over waste during the Chuseok holiday,’ adding, ‘We ask that residents also thoroughly separate their recyclables and put out their waste on the designated collection days announced by local governments, so that everyone can enjoy a clean and pleasant holiday.’
