Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) held a “Children First” traffic safety campaign on Oct. 1 around the Sindo Branch School of Incheon Airport Elementary School in Bukdo-myeon to prevent traffic accidents involving children. The campaign aimed to encourage drivers to practice safe driving by coming to a stop at crosswalks and giving priority to child pedestrians.

Participants included the Bukdo-myeon Office, the Bukdo Police Substation of Incheon Yeongjong Police Station, and teachers and students of the Sindo Branch School of Incheon Airport Elementary School. They agreed to work together to create safe routes to and from school and to spread a traffic culture that puts children first.
At the site, participants told vehicles passing the school why safe driving is important inside the child protection zone and promoted basic rules such as stopping temporarily and slowing down at crosswalks.
The campaign was prompted by changes in the traffic environment since the opening of the Sindo-Pyeonghwa Bridge. An Ongjin County official explained, “Since the Sindo-Pyeonghwa Bridge opened, vehicle traffic around Sindo has increased, and special attention to child pedestrian safety has become necessary.”
The official said, “Because children are relatively less capable of judging and responding to surrounding traffic conditions, I ask drivers to actively practice the ‘Children First’ traffic culture in daily life by stopping at crosswalks and proceeding only after children have crossed safely.”
The official added, “We will continue to carry out traffic safety education and campaigns for the safety of the transportation vulnerable, including children and the elderly.” The campaign served as a reminder that small actions by drivers are what matter most in keeping children’s routes to school safe on an island area where traffic has grown following the opening of a bridge.
