Incheon Metropolitan City will move up the opening time of its local slaughterhouse to 7 a.m., one hour earlier, from August 24 to prepare for the sharp rise in meat consumption during the Chuseok peak season. The city says it aims to ensure a stable supply of livestock products during the holiday while also reinforcing hygiene and safety management.

Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that, with meat consumption expected to increase about a month ahead of the Chuseok holiday, it will open its slaughterhouse early to ensure a hygienic and smooth supply of livestock products.

Slaughter volumes rise sharply in the run-up to the holiday. According to last year’s figures, the local slaughterhouse processed an average of 75 head of cattle per day under normal conditions, but the number surged to more than 120 head during the Chuseok peak season. When large volumes are concentrated within limited working hours, it can lead to supply disruptions and a heavier burden on hygiene management, so the city intends to secure more leeway by moving up the opening time.

Accordingly, from August 24 to September 16, for a total of 12 days excluding Thursdays and Fridays, the city will adjust the slaughterhouse opening time to 7 a.m., one hour earlier than before. The measure is intended to ensure a stable supply and smooth distribution of livestock products during the holiday period.

Disease control and safety management will be carried out in parallel. To prevent animals suspected of carrying infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever from being slaughtered or distributed, the city will immediately halt operations upon discovery of any suspected animal and take thorough quarantine measures. It also plans to further strengthen meat safety inspections in line with the increased slaughter volume, blocking the distribution of substandard meat in advance.

The measure is aimed at ensuring both a stable supply and the safety of livestock products served on holiday tables, with a focus on allowing citizens to consume meat with confidence even during the peak season.

Kim Myung-hee, director of the Incheon Institute of Public Health and Environment, said, ‘By extending the slaughterhouse working hours for Chuseok, we will ensure there are no disruptions in the supply of livestock products, and we will do our utmost to secure the safety of meat so that citizens can eat with peace of mind.’
