Seoul’s Gangseo-gu (District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon) held a ‘Communication and Cooperation Meeting’ with local city councilors in the district office’s main conference room on the 6th, reviewing a cooperation framework aimed at speeding up 79 urban redevelopment projects underway in the district and promoting balanced local growth. The meeting was arranged so that the administration and the council could share information and jointly explore ways to provide support amid the tangled, project-by-project procedures, with a focus on reducing the confusion and conflict residents face over redevelopment work.

Attending the meeting were District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon along with city councilors Ko Chan-yang, Jang Sang-gi, Song Sun-hyo, Hong Jae-hee and Kim Byung-jin, as well as officials from the district’s urban redevelopment departments — some 20 people in all. Participants shared, item by item, the progress of the 79 urban redevelopment projects currently under way in the area and discussed the administrative support needed to keep each project moving smoothly.

In particular, participants agreed on the need to reduce the confusion and conflict residents may experience because of the specific nature of each project and the complexity of the procedures involved. Redevelopment projects often involve sharply diverging interests at every stage — from forming an association to drawing up a redevelopment plan and obtaining project implementation approval — so keeping residents informed of progress in a timely manner and widening the channels for communication have long been seen as factors that make or break a project.
Against this backdrop, the district plans to make this meeting the starting point for a standing communication structure in which the administration and the council deliberate over the same information. Because city councilors have a firm grasp of local issues, the emphasis of the cooperation falls on reflecting the voices heard at the point of contact with residents in the project process and on resolving bottlenecks early.
District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon said, “Because urban redevelopment projects go beyond simply improving the environment and are directly tied to residents’ lives, we will do our utmost to raise residents’ understanding and ensure each project moves forward without a hitch.”
Taking this meeting as a turning point, Gangseo-gu intends to further solidify its cooperative framework with the city council and to concentrate its administrative capacity on minimizing the inconvenience and conflict residents experience during the redevelopment process. The district said it will continue communicating with relevant agencies and residents in line with each project’s progress and will build a foundation for balanced local growth.
